CLOSENESS AND DISTANCE BETWEEN THE READER
AND A CHARACTER

closeness: identify with the character → author makes reader feel empathy with the
character; more empathy if reader knows about his thoughts and feelings

ELEMENTS/PLOT/STRUCTURE

E LEMENTS :
Most short stories concentrate on one main character, a single setting and one important event
or problem. Unlike in a novel, in a short story the characters, the situation, etc. are not fully
developed; the focus is on one single aspect which undergoes a change in the course of the
story.
P LOT /S TRUCTURE :
1. exposition, in which the place, time, characters (= setting), the theme, etc. are
introduced;
2. rising action, in which a conflict between two forces is developed; i. e. the key situation
in which the protagonist finds himself/herself, is described;
3. climax, when the conflict reaches its highest point;
4. turning point, in which there is a change in the conflict or suspense; the key situation (cf.
above) is solved
5. falling action, in which there is a reduction of suspense, the tension is released;
6. solution (denouement), when the conflict is resolved, instead: open ending → conflict
is not resolved, reader is left wondering what might happen next or surprise ending →
the reader’s expectations are not fulfilled but instead a surprising solution of the conflict
is presented

ACTION AND PLOT

action: everything that happens in a fictional story; there are two different kinds of action
external action: what the characters do in the “real”, physical world
internal action: what takes place in a character’s mind, i. e. his thoughts, feelings,
memories, associations etc.
plot: an author’s selection and arrangement of events in a fictional text; discussions of the plot
include not just what happens, but also how and why things happen the way they do; normally
