1. Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
2. Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Structure: SACAI NOV 2021 3. Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
4. Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
• It has 4 stanzas with four lines
(quatrains) each.
• Irregular iambic pentameter is used. 5. Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
• The rhyme scheme is AABB 6. Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead.
7. Put crêpe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
8. Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
Function of repetition: 9. He was my North, my South, my East and West,
10. My working week and my Sunday rest,
‘My’ is repeated throughout stanza 3 to show that the person
11. My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
who died was very dear to the speaker. It makes the poem very

The poem shows the devastating effect death has on the people still
living. The speaker grieves the loss of a loved one and feels that the
world should mourn with him for example, he wants time to stand
still. He realises that death means the end of love. He feels hopeless
and that nothing good can ever happen again.
