 Question 1

1.1. A teacher counsellor must possess positive personal characteristics to be an effective
counsellor. Name and discuss three, characteristics you may possess that would enable you to be
an effective teacher counsellor.

Empathy
Empathy is essential for understanding and sharing the feelings of students. By being empathetic, I
can connect with students on an emotional level, demonstrating genuine care and understanding of
their experiences. This characteristic allows me to create a supportive and compassionate
environment where students feel comfortable expressing their concerns and seeking guidance.

Sense of Humor
A sense of humor can be a valuable characteristic for a teacher counsellor. It can help in building
rapport, easing tension, and creating a relaxed atmosphere during counseling sessions. Appropriately
used, humor can foster a positive and open environment, making it easier for students to engage in
discussions and feel more at ease when addressing sensitive topics.

Fairness
Fairness is crucial for creating an environment of equity and respect. As a teacher counsellor,
possessing a strong sense of fairness ensures that I treat all students with impartiality and without
bias. This characteristic allows me to advocate for the rights and well-being of all students, ensuring
that each student's voice is heard and valued in the counseling process.
