Task 3 notes:
Theories:
Concept of role:
All individuals in a setting are expected to conform to their role. For example, nurse follows code
of conduct and residents behave appropriately.
Conformity to minority/ majority influence (Asch, Moscovichi):
Conformity is when an individual changes their behaviour to fit in with a group of people.
Conformity to minority is when a member of a minority group changes the beliefs of a majority
group to their own.
(Moscovici) conducted an experiment with 2 confederates and 4 real participants. They took
park in a colour-blind test, where they had to look at 36 slides which were different shades of
blue and had to say what colour they were out loud. In the first part of the experiment the
confederates answered green for all 36 slides, they were consistent. In the second part, they
answered green 24 times and blue 12 times, they were inconsistent. The consistent minority
influenced the majority by 8.4%. Whereas, the inconsistent minority by 1.2%.
Conformity to majority is when a member of a minority group changes their beliefs to the
beliefs of a majority group in order to fit in.
(Asch) conducted an experiment to investigate majority influence. There was 1 real participant
(who thought the others were also real participants). All were seated in a room where they
could see the target line. They were then shown three comparison lines and asked to judge out
loud which of the three lines was the same length as the target line. This was done 18 times and
the confederates gave the wrong answer 12 times. Asch found that the participants gave the
wrong answer 37% of the time. Later, when interviewed they said they knew the correct answer
but didn’t want to speak up about it.
Conformity to social roles (Zimbardo):
(Zimbardo) carried out a study on how much roles influence behaviour in prisons. A mock prison
was created in the basement of a university where he worked. The participants were allocated
to take on the role of a guard or prisoner. To help with identification the guards were given
uniforms and dark sunglasses. Whereas, prisoners were given identical convict clothes were only
addressed by a number. Eventually, the guards started treating the prisoners brutally by
punishing them for not following instructions. Prisoners became distressed and the study had to
be stopped after 3 days because it was having a negative effect on their mental health. This
study shows us how much people conform to their roles.
