Levels of Analysis
The first level that I will use will be Foundation level, which is at the bottom of the sports
performance pyramid, usually aimed for school children . The second level that i have
chosen is elite level. This is at the top of the praymid, for example Cristano Ronaldo is an
elite player.
The purpose of analysis at the foundation is to make sure that they are enjoying themselves.
However, there’s more purposes for example it is important to identify individual’s positions.
Also to recognise strengths and weaknesses of each player in the team, so the coach knows
what to work on.
There’s a more important purpose of analysis at the elite level than there is at the foundation
level. At the elite level all individuals are good enough to be there and it’s why they focus
more on the team. The analysis will be used to find out more about the opposition figuring
out their strengths and weaknesses. Watching the opponents previous games to understand
any tactics they use or set piece routines. Other examples include how they set up, attack,
defend and which players are dangerous. The main objective from analysis at the elite level
is to learn how to break down the opposition.
At foundation level there’s no need for expensive resources to be used as they won’t be
helpful and at this level there’s not enough financing in order to buy the equipment.
Therefore, the best way to analyse performance at the lowest level on the pyramid is to
observe the players and the opposition. This is because it doesn’t cost anything and is useful
as any equipment and data for children will not make a significant difference. This is
because they will grow and their bodies will change as well as the pitch size and their roles
on the pitch.
On the other hand, at the elite level they use all of the expensive equipment resources to
analyse sports performance. This is because the big clubs have enough money and state of
art facilities. They use equipment such as:
● GPS vests - These monitor the current fitness levels of individuals
● Heart Rate Monitors - these measure the heart rate and indicate how many intense
runs have been made.
● Statistics - show how many times a player performed a specific situation during a
match.
