Saiful Assignment 2: Preparing for Work Experience
Introduction:
As part of my interview preparation, I have explored the different skills that will improve my
experience and chances of being successful.
Six skills outlined below are important when performing a interview:
1. Active listening
2. Seeking clarification
3. Relevant questions
4. Body language
5. Facial expressions
6. Posture
Explain 4:
Active listening:
Practicing "active listening" is the way to develop our communication skills. This is when we
make a deliberate effort to hear not just the words that another person is saying, but, most
importantly, the whole message being conveyed. Doing this in an interview will show the
retailer that you are focused and interested. In an interview, this ability helps you remain
focused and alert and makes you stand out throughout the recruiting process. More than half
of the contact is non-verbal, which means that when talking to employers, having good
listening and communication skills will place you above the rest.
Seeking clarification:
Seeking clarification is when you ask others to explain, you ask them to describe things in a
particular way or give more detail so you can better understand it. This is different from
asking others to repeat something. For example in a interview if you didn't understand
something you would say something like “I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by
ABC”. It is helpful because this means that the listener is right in interpreting what the
speaker has said, eliminating confusion. It also reassures the speaker that the listener is
genuinely interested in them and is attempting to understand what they are saying.
Body language:
Body language plays a very important part in making or damaging someone's career during
an interview. You should have eye contact with the other person during the interview. One of
the most important aspects of the body language during job interviews, eye contact making
and maintaining, is a must. Not only does it demonstrate that you are genuinely paying
attention to your interviewer, it also shows that you interact with the situation. And other
factors such sitting up straight showing your interest and using things like hand gestures.
This is important in an interview, since a person's body language in a job interview gives the
interviewer a lot of knowledge that the spoken word alone does not convey. It shows
whether you are optimistic, and focused.
