Curious incident of the dog in the night-time - Mark Haddon
Christopher, (lives in Swindon a small place) 15 yrs 3 months and 2 days, met Siobhan 8 years ago.
She draw faces for him, sas, happy and in between for him to show when he didn’t understand what
someone was saying.
Bu it was difficult to use so now if he doesn’t know what someone is saying he asks them what they
mean or he walks away.
About the book
Christopher decides to find out who killed the neighbour’ dog, his mystery story becomes more
complicated than he could have ever predicted.
2 7 minutes after midnight. A garden fork is sticking out of the dog, called Wellington. He walks
through Mrs Shears’ fate and knelt beside the dog. The muzzle of the dog is still warm. Wellington is
a big poodle, curly black fur. Christopher John Francis Boone, wonders who killed him and why.
He pulls the fork out of the dog and hugs him. He likes dogs they are faithful, they don’t tell lies as
they can’t talk. He hears screaming, Mes Shears shouts at him...Let go of my dog. He hates people
screaming at him, he is afraid they are going to hit or touch him. He put his hands over his ears and
closes his eyes. Then he is pressed with his forehead onto the grass. Page 7 This is a murder mystery
novel. Siobhan (long blonde hair, glasses made of green plastic) said that I should write something I
would want to read myself. Mr Jeavons smells of soap and wears brown shoes that have
approximately 60 tiny circular holes in each of them. He only likes books about science and maths
and murder mystery novels. S said he has to start eith something to grab people’s attention. So he
started with the dog. And because it happened to him. S said people are mostly killed not dogs
because readers cared more about people than dogs. He cares about dogs because they are faithful
and honest. And some dogs were cleverer and more interesting than people.
11 The police is coming they are asking him too much information. Chris starts making a groaning
noise he does when there is too much information coming into his head from the outside world.
The policeman took hold of his arm and lifts him onto his feet. He doesn’t like to be touched and he
hits the policeman.
13 He doesn’t like jokes because it is like three people trying to talk to you at the same time about
different things.
17 Talking about the universe
19 He has given the chapters of the boek prime numbers because he likes them. They are used for
writing codes. He is taken to the policestation
23 He describes what he has in his pockets. He wants to keep his watch on because he needed to
know exactly what time it was otherwise he would scream. He likes it in the police cell because it is
almost a perfect cube. He wonders how he could escape
29 He finds people confusing. They tslk a lot without using words and they often talk in metaphors.
I laughed my sicks off. He was the apple of my eye. They had a skeleton in the cupboard. We had a
real pig of a day. The dog was stone dead
31 At 1:12 a.m he father arrived at the police station he hears him shooting. He gets a caution from
the officer for hitting the policeman. They can go.
37 He doesn’t tell lies not because he is a good person but because he can’t tell lies. Not telling the
truth makes him feel shaky and scared. That’s why he doesn’t like poroer novels, because they are
lies about things which didn’t happen and they make him feel shaky and scared. And that’s why
everything he has written is true.
41 His father says try to keep your nose out of other people’s business. He says that he is going to
find out who killed the dog. His father thinks he hasn’t listen. His father wants him to leave it, it’s
only a dog.
43 His mother died 2 years ago. His father told him she was in hospital for her heart. He couldn’t visit
her because she had to rest.

,47 He likes things to be in a nice order especially if those things were numbers or an argument. But
he also used colours for god and black days. He diesn’t call himselves clever but observant. Having
things always in a nice order, made him feel safe. He starts writing this because it is a Good Day and
he wants to find out what happened to Wellington.
53 His mother died 2 weeks after his father told him she was in hospital. He hadn’t been into
hospital. She died of a heart attack. She was only 38 years old.
59 Siobhan always tells him exactely what not to do and the reason. He goes to mrs Shears she
doesn’t want to talk to him and says she is going to call the police when he isn’t leaving.
61 Mrs. Forbes and Reverend Peters say his mother is in heaven. But heaven doesn’t exist. But
where is God? Hi mother is cremated but he doesn’t know where her ash is. He didn’t go to the
funeral.
67 He is going to ask strangers whether they have seen anything happened with the dog. He doesn’t
like talking to strangers. They are hard to understand. But if you are going to do detective work you
have to be brave. He knocks on the doors and asks whether they know who killed Wellington.
When he asks a lady whether she knew of anyone who want to make Mrs. Shears sad she said he
should talk with his father. But he can’t because he told him to stay out of other people’s business.
He has a conversation with Mrs. Alexander. She asks him inside for tea but he replied he doesn’t go
into other people’s houses. She offers to bring some outside. He asks for orange squash. She was
inside for more than 6 minutes. He is afraid she is calling the police so he walks away.
By asking himself questions he decides that Mr. Shears is his prime suspect. Two years ago he left
Mrs. Shears. Then she started cooking for him and his father after his mother died. Sometimes she
stayed overnight. C liked it when she made things tidy but she spoke in riddles: I’m going to hit the
hay (=I’m going to bed). It’s brass monkeys out there = very cold. Let’s rustle up some tucker = make
something to eat. C doesn’t like it when he doesn’t know what she is meaning. He now thinks Mr.
Shears hated Mrs. S and killed the dog.
71 C is at a school with children with learning difficulties but he calls them stupid. Because he thinks
everyone has learning difficulties. C is going to prove he is not stupid by taking his A levels. His father
insists it is possible at school (he is the first one) and he even wants to pay £50 for it to be taken after
school. Reverend Peters is going to be the invigilator (=surveillant). C plans: taking A-level maths and
then going further maths and physics then university... a degree in maths or physics or maths and
physics. Get a job, earn a lot of money, pay someone to look after him (cook wash clothes). Get a
lady to marry him, be his wife and look after him so he can have company and not be on his own.
73 C thought his parents would get a divorce because of his Behavioral Problems. His parents get
angry with him and each other because of the problems.
79 His father is waiting for him with supper. Mrs. S has phoned him that C was poking round her
garden. Father bangs the table with his fist because C mentioned the name of Mr. S. because he is
evil and Mrs. S is not his friend anymore. C has to promise he is going to stop playing detective. He
promises.
83 C explains why he would be a good astronaut.
89 C tells Siobhan that his father told him he couldn’t do anymore detecting, which meant the book
was finished. Then he tells about his Black Days.
97 He meets Mrs. Alexander in the supermarket and has a conversation with her. And asks her about
Mr. S as his father hasn’t forbidden that. Then she says maybe your father is right he shouldn’t talk
about these things because obviously his father is going to find it upsetting. C asks her whether Mr. S
has anyhing to do with his mother’s death.... her heart-attack her being in the hospital. Mrs. A is
upset she says she didn’t know. She asks C so you don’t know? She tells him before she died his
mother was very very good friends with Mr. S (sex). She asks him not to tell his father and when he
wants to talk about it he can knock on her door anytime.
101 Mr. Jeavons says C likes maths because it is safe. It meant solving problems, intersting and
difficult but always a straightforward answer at the end. Then C goes on explaining The Monty Hall
Problem. (Marilyn vos Savant = wetenschapper).

, 103 Rhodri works for his father (heating maintenance and boiler repair). Siobhan tells him what
should be in a book. So he wants to put in a description of the garden. But the garden isn’t
interesting or different. Now he tells about seeing an alien spaceship in clouds like in Dunes or
Blake’s 7 or Close Encounters of the Third Kind ( science fiction movies). Later he smells nothing in
the garden and he finds that interesting. He goes inside to feed Toby.
107 His favorite book is The Hound of the Baskervilles. He likes it vecause it is a detective story, which
means there are clues and Red Herrings ( = je wordt op een dwaalspoor gebracht = to lead someone
astray). He describes some of the clues (aanwijzingen totaal 3) and 3 Red Herrings.
Page 66 daughter if a yeoman = dochter van iemand die voor ze werkt, daredevil roisterers =
waaghals herrieschopper). Page 67 a bog = moeras). Detaching his mind at will = you don’t notice
anything besides what you are doing : reading, playing chess. Page 70 2 interesting facts about
Sherlock Holmes.
109 He let Siobhan ( teacher at his school) read what he has written already. She asks him whether
he is going to tell his father about what Mrs. Alexander had told him. S asks whether it made him sad
to find out that his mother and Mr. Shears had an affair? It didn’t made him sad.
113 C memory is like a smellyrack and soundtrack. He can Rewind and Fast Forwarx and Pause like a
videorecorder (p 72, 73, 74)
127 He likes watching Blue Planet videos about life in the deepest parts of the ocean.
His father finds the book C is writing L. He left it on the kitchen table. He wants to know whether C
has really spoken to Mrs. Alexander. Father is angry and calls C stupid. He is angry because he told C
not to go sticking his nose in someone elses business. His excuse is that he was chatting with Mrs. A
and wasn’t doing investigation. His father grabs him he doesn’t like people grabbing him so he hits
his father twice. And then he has no memories for a short while. He has blood on his right hand and
his father is holding his book. His father unlocks the back door and throws his book in the dustbin.
Then he gets him self a can of beer.
131 C explains why he hates yellow and brown. Mrs. Forbes says hating yellow and brown is silly.
Siobhan doesn’t agree but C thinks Mrs. F is a bit right. Because in life you have to tske lots of
decisions and if you don’t take decisions you would never do anything because you would spend all
your time choosing between things you could do.
137 The next day father said he was sorry that he hit C and he didn’t mean to. Then they went to
Twycross Zoo. His father makes him sandwiches because he doesn’t like eating food from places he
doesn’t know. And because of the firecast of rain it wouldn’t he too criwded becausr C doesn’t like
crowds of people. C tells about his favorite 3 animals. His father tells him he loves him and he
sometimes gets angry because he doesn’t want C to get hurt. C is not sure he understands. Then they
spread their fingers out in a fan and they made their fingers and thumbs touch each other ( this is the
way his father can touch C). Then C makes a map of the zoo from memory as a test.
139 C likes Sherlock Holmes but not the author (writer)Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Readon he believed in
the supernatural when he got old he joined the Spiritual Society.
Reason: his son died of influenza during the First World War and Arthur still wanted to talk to him.
In 1917 something famous happened with fairies (p 82)
Why C knows the photographs are fake and the fairies are painted on paper:
It looks like the fairies have moved during exposure. When you take a picture of paper it will move
during exposure and the exposure was very long as you can see a little waterfall in the background
and it is blurred. The fairies look just like fairies in old books and they have wings and dresses and
tights and shoed. It is like aliens landing on earth and being like Daleks from Doctor Who
(maincharacter science fiction serie on tv. Daleks are aliens from the serie). 1981 the children who
photograph the fairies admit they aren’t true. C explains Occam’s razor (het is niet een scheermes
maar een filosofische hypothese. Het heeft dus niets met scheren te maken).
149 The next day when his father isn’t home he wants to get the book out of the dustbin. But it isn’t
there so he starts looking in the house and also listens really hard whether he hears his fathers van.
