Leadership and teamwork 3
Introduction
To begin with, In the public services having teams and leaders for those teams
is vital for the organisation to meet its goals and needs. Through this
assignment, I will be discussing my participation in an outdoor teamwork even
which was water based earlier on in the semester. My first task will be, delivering
my own personal statement on my participation and the positives and negatives of
how I performed. My next task, will be me discussing the different types of teams and
the evolution of how teams work and then the definition of team cohesion through
knowledge of Tuckmans theory and how it relates. I will also be discussing the good
and poor team cohesion on a public service.
, Task 1
During our first semester we had to participate in an outdoor water activity which
consisted of balding a raft out of 10 wooden polls, 4 blue barrels and consistent
amount of rope which would hold 4 people so that we can use paddle sticks to obtain
a fake body or dummy. We had 30 minutes to build the raft from scratch and couldn’t
use anything other than the materials provided.
During this task I personally felt as if I did really well in adding ideas to the team, by
this I mean that when we ran into a problem, such as a loose barrel just before the
time went, I immediately come up with a new way of attaching it to the base of the
raft so that we all stayed afloat on the water. To tie the barrels onto the base of the
raft, we had to use our knowledge skills and the first knot that we tried unfortunately
did not work, so the second one that we come up with I made sure that if anyone
didn’t get it or needed help that I would give them suitable directing so that they
knew how to do it accordingly. This showed my ability to encourage the development
of my fellow team members. In addition, when the brief was given I started to
immediately build a picture in my head of what we could do so that I could present it
to the team, when we come up with all of the ideas and discussed them we all mixed
bits of the knowledge we obtained from each other to make a raft that worked and got
out main goal accomplished showing that I presented consideration to new ideas and
suggestions from others. When starting to build the raft, I said that we should put the
raft closer to the inside however I was corrected by one of team members and I
agreed with them after it was stated, doing this showed my drive to learn more
information and encouragement for feedback on my decision making and knowledge.
When we were afloat, we were set aside by another group who we essentially had to
work against to get the patient dummy first, however when we were on the water
their raft didn’t work as well as ours so we decided to cheer them on and keep them
motivated so it was fair and everyone was happy which also created a positive work
environment for our team and the others. Organisation was key for this task to be
completed to the maximum efficiency so that when we had our brief I said that we
should all split up and do different things appointing 2 members per corner which
worked really well as we all know what we were doing and where we were.
Correspondingly, I also showed effective communication when it came to gathering
information across all boards so that were as quick as possible, I always made sure
that everyone had a say in what we were doing and if they wanted to say something
they could as I believe that effective communication is a key role in ensuring a good
and affective team. Another aspect, I can say I was confident in was the cooperation
