As readers we often think of genres as a type of writing style, including drama, comedy,
romance. We rely of specific conventions and expectations throughout the novel. Genre Theory,
however, goes a level deeper than that, by describing the genre as a response to a specific social
situation. “Genres are extremely important to understand because they are, in varying degrees,
how studios categorize the films they make and how audiences categorize the films they want to
see.” (Goodykoontz, 2019). Techniques and design elements all factor into what and how the
director would like the audience to portray the film. The director has the power to make a
societal connection through the film, this connection can have positive and negative impacts.
Identify a feature-length film that fits your selected genre and briefly summarize the movie.
For this paper I have chosen to focus on the film Goodfellas, written by Nicholas Pileggi and
Martin Scorsese and directed by Martin Scorsese. The film was released in 1990 under the crime/
gangster genre. Goodfellas falls under the crime genre because of its obvious visuals and the
thematic elements throughout the storyline. This film is known for winning the widespread
critical acclaim and earned six Oscar nominations. (Brook,2015). Goodfellas is based on author
Nicholas Pileggi’s bestseller “Wise guy”. The story starts off with Henry Hill, a young boy, is
fascinated with the mafia lifestyle that he is seeing around him. Wanting to be exactly that he
finds his way working as an errand runner in a dispatch cabstand. Slowly gaining the members
trust by working hard and advancing fast, with each task getting more difficult as he got older.
Even though the tasks are getting more violent every time Henry and his two other accomplices
don’t mind because the cash flow is promising. These three guys Henry, Jimmy, and Tommy all
find themselves fighting for the same in charge position. With Tommy being, the only one out of
