Learnings of Week One Journal
Week one of this MBA Capstone class has been exciting. We all hit the ground running.
There was no introduction involve like in previous courses. I took some time to read the
announcements by Dr. Kuznia because I wanted to make sure I would fulfill his class
expectations. I appreciate that he took the time to go over his expectations for the class because it
gave me a clear understanding of how to tackle the topics in the next couple of weeks, of course.
I understand that this class is meant to be challenging, but at the same time, it will help us
connect the dots of all the previous materials we have learned so far in this master's program.
Week One Learnings
This first week we are introduced to a simulation for a company named Hisco. We will be
navigating through this company's financials and business model during the next few weeks of
class. After completing the activities, reading, and videos, I was able to gain a better
understanding of the company and my role in helping the organization become successful. Hisco
has been in business for two years, but it is not a profitable company, and I am being hired to
help change the course of business and hopefully get the company back on track. The medical
device that Hisco produces allows nurses and physician’s assistant as a reader for patients' data.
As the financial manager, it is my job to understand the medical device industry and the
competitor in the area we are trying to win in (Aileron, 2011).
There are two main competitors Matek and Redex. Hisco understands that both of the
competitors have competitive advantages that have made them successful in the market. Redex
has been useful in manufacturing, and Matek has a strong marketing team that has to help them
generate more sales each year. Hisco has a strong engineering department, but our manufacturing
