Main character description:
Hazel Grace Lancaster:
Hazel is a realistic young girl. She has stage 4 lung cancer and has to walk
with an oxygen tank. Hazel cares about the people she loves the most. ‘’I
wanted to make my parents happy. There is only one thing in this world
shittier than biting it from cancer when you’re sixteen, and that’s having a
kid who bites it from cancer’’ (p.8). Hazel meets a boy in her support
group named Augustus. From the moment they met they had a ‘thing’ for
each other and Hazel falls in love with him. ‘’ Flirting was new to me, but I
liked it’’ (p.52) Hazels favorite book is ‘’An imperial affliction’’ by Peter van
Houten. She has read it multiple times, and has lent it to Gus as well. ‘’My
favorite book, by a wide margin, was An imperial affliction, but I didn’t like
to tell people about it.’’ (p.33)
Augustus Walters (Gus):
Gus is a charming, good looking young man. He is one year older than
Hazel (17 years old). He is a smart and positive kid. He has lost one leg
due to his cancer. Despite his illness he is funny and very caring. ‘’As we
got to the end of the room, Gus stopped and said: you Okay? I nodded.’’
(p.201) He also has a thing with metaphors. ‘’They don’t kill you unless
you light them. He says as mom arrived at the curb. And I’ve never lit
one. It’s a metaphor, see: you put the killing thing right between your
teeth, but you don’t give it the power to do its killing.’’ (p.20) Gus loves
Hazel with his whole heart. ‘’I love her. I am so lucky to love her, Van
Houten. You don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world, old man, but
you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices. I hope she
likes hers.’’ (p. 313)
