MGT 410- Servant Leadership
Introduction (Emily)
Looking through the different major companies that have a significant impact on our
leadership environment, Southwest Airlines and Tesla Inc. are two companies that stand out.
Different practices in leadership styles in both companies are remarkably successful within their
markets. Southwest Airlines is known for the practice of servant leadership and Tesla Inc is
known for their transformation leadership style. Reviewing both companies mission and vision
statements, we will be able to see how each company uses their leadership style to impact the
culture, the organization, and the Christian worldview perspective to allow them to be leaders in
their industries.
Comparison of Vision and Mission Statements (Emily)
Every company should have a vision and mission statement. A vision statement tells
where the organization would like to be at and a mission statement advises how the organization
will reach those objectives (Atlassian.com, 2021). Southwest Airlines is known for their servant
leadership style and it is shown through their mission and vision statements. Southwest Airline
mission statement is “Connect people to what’s important in their lives through friendly, reliable,
and low-cost air travel” (Southwest.com, 2021). This mission statement allows them to obtain
their vision, “to be the world’s most loved, most efficient, and most profitable airline”
(Southwest.com, 2021). Tesla’s vision is to “create the most compelling care company of the 21st
century by driving the world’s transition to electric vehicles” and its mission is “to accelerate the
, advent of sustainable transport by bringing compelling mass-market electric cars to market as
soon as possible” (FourWeekMBA.com, n.d.). Reviewing their mission and vision statements
the similarity that they each offer is transportation. Each of them is striving to accelerate the
transportation business and being the top in their categories. Southwest vision and mission
statement focuses on their consumers needs and wants while being efficient. Tesla concentrates
on bringing innovative technology and vehicles to the market as soon as possible.
Impact on Vision and Mission Statements on Culture (Emily)
A company's culture, or collection of values and beliefs are outlined in their vision and
mission statements (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010). A company will build its own culture
through rituals, meanings, and create a history that will be pasted though the leadership team.
The culture of a company is heavily shown through the servant leadership style. Southwest is
known for the family working environment and the different spirit that is shown throughout their
company. They have a Culture Committee that is set to help create the Southwest Spirit and is
made up of volunteers (McGee-Cooper, Looper, and Trammel, 2008). These volunteers are
committed to setting up different activities for their employees to participate and to continue
traditions that have been set up. On Valentine’s Day, it is Southwest tradition to name a “Heroes
of the Heart,” that is recognized for their hard work and are honored (McGee-Cooper, Looper,
and Trammel, 2008). Southwest is a great example of a clan culture, a culture that focuses on the
community, family and team developments (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010). Tesla focuses
more on an adhocracy culture, that provides new innovations, products, and on providing their
consumers with energy that is sustainable (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010). The mission that
Tesla has is the reason that motivates 83% of their employees to continue to work for Tesla
(comparably.com).
