The roles of the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) have many facets, styles and

competencies. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) as an APN also has many facets. The NP can work

in many settings, with different ages and with different populations. They are competent

providers and serve many different roles.

Leadership Style

In the article 10 Tips for Becoming a Better Leader, Kendra Cherry gives the reader an

online leadership style quiz. Prior to taking the quiz, I aligned myself with the Transformational

leader. Upon taking the quiz, my result was Democratic leader. After being an Emergency

Department Charge Nurse, I believe my leadership style is a complimentary mixture of

Transformational and Democratic leadership styles. Working in the trenches along side your

staff is very inspirationally motivating for the staff and by keeping the lines of communication

open, it makes for a very strong leader which is what I strive to be.

Transformational leaders are inspirational role models. They encourage others to perform

at the top of their ability (Conrad, et al, 2011). Democratic leaders prefer to gather input from

the group members but hold on to the final say in a decision. They also encourage and motivate

group members Utilizing multiple styles of leadership, depending on the circumstances at the

time, is what makes a good leader (Cherry, 2019).

, Regulatory and Legal Requirements in Idaho

To become a Certified Nurse Practitioner in the state of Idaho, you must first possess an

Idaho Nursing License. The nurse must complete both a graduate or post graduate education

and a nationally accredited Advanced Practice Registered Nurse program. Finally, the nurse

must pass a national exam for the certification. The NP applies and pays the fees to the Board of

Nursing to begin practicing. Once the NP begins practicing in Idaho, the Board of

Nursing requires the NP to submit biennial peer reviews.

Practice

My interviewee, Dr. Edith Roe, PhD, AGPCNP, has her own private practice. Her

office is on one of the main avenues in Homedale, Idaho. The Idaho Medical Clinic is a free-

standing medical practice, not associated with any other health system. Homedale, Idaho is a

rural community with a population of 2,630.

Trinity Health Organization is a catholic based organization based in Livonia,

Michigan. It is on of the largest multi-institutional catholic health care delivery systems in the

nation. It includes: Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, Saint Alphonsus Medical Group

and Saint Alphonsus Health Systems. My plan is to work for Saint Alphonsus Medical Group –

Caldwell, either as a Primary Care Provider in the Family Medicine office or as a provider in

the Urgent Care Center in the Primary Care office. Caldwell is a small city approximately 50

miles from Boise, Idaho. Caldwell’s population is 47,700. Caldwell is an economically

challenged farm community with the average individual income of $16,237 in comparison to

$28,555 as the US average. The need for providers in Caldwell is great. Caldwell’s providers

per capita is 75 per

100,000 compared to the US average of 210 per 100,000. My colleagues will be

physicians, physician assistants, RNs, LVNs and medical assistants.
