Critical thinking applies to all aspects of life. Whether dealing with friends or having

discussion with co-workers. In a Critical Thinking scenario Sally is a customer service rep for a

small company selling printers. In this scenario she finds herself in a couple of situations that

require her use logic and patience. In the scenario we will understand what barriers she is faced

with and what tools she uses as a critical thinking to overcome them.

Elements of Critical Thinking

Initially Sally is thrusted into a situation that she is seems to be uncomfortable with. Her

colleagues are discussing some issues at work that she does not seem to be directly affected by or

be queued in on. There seems to be some barriers in place through this scenario. Conformity

and a little bit of stress. Conformity is really at the forefront here as she nods here head like a

bobblehead in agreement. Sally did have a stressful day which going out after work and talking

about work does become counterproductive. All in all Sally has great characteristics of a critical

thinker. The description of her nodding could simply be her observing the dialogue and not

speaking to something she is unfamiliar with. To be a critical thinker, you need to be a good

listener and try to understand the totality of the argument, discussion, or data presented. Think

before you speak is a saying for a reason.

Reason, Emotion, and Communication

Emotions can ruin our reason and ability to communicate effectively. Sabotaging us into a

hypnotic state. Sally separates how she handles things in two separate scenarios. Sally does not

accept the answer from her manager because his argument does not support the discussion at

hand. She did not allow emotion to affect her when dealing with her manager. Sally much used
