Gail Risk and Threat Assessment Report

BSA/ 520

Introduction

Smallville (SCOPE) provides collection processing services for the city. The

organization collects tax payments, licensing fees, parking tickets, and court notices. Payments

are collected via the mail, online payment website, and IVR (Interactive Voice Response)

System. Payments come in the form of checks, credit cards, and debit cards. Once invoices are

processed SCOPE, then deposits the payments into the city of Smallville's bank account.

Due to the nature of SCOPE's business and future expansion, there is considerable

concern regarding the possibility of risks associated with Smallville client's online

transaction activities. Protecting SCOPE's assets demands an accurate understanding of the

risks the organization faces.

Online Transaction Risks and
Threats

Online transactions consist of transferring funds (money) through the internet (online)

over electronic fund transfer.

Gail Industries is aware that technological advancement that enables online

transactions are a treasure trove for cybercriminals. Therefore, SCOPE must be mindful of the

significant security risks and threats that advancement attracts. Due to the nature of the

organization, there must be a focus on all internet related transactions associated with external

users.

Transactions attacks consist of:

Online Security Attacks: Online transaction brings a wide range of security threats.

, Threats such as malware, phishing, hacking, and spam mail.

System Reliability: In the event that the ISP (Internet Service Provider) crashes, there

may be errors in the online payment system, and the eCommerce plugin might have

glitches.

Privacy Issues: Possible Identity Theft, Spamming, and Unsolicited Marketing could

occur, resulting in client personal and confidential data being compromised.

Customer Disputes: Glitches may cause mistakes such as payment methods being

charged twice. When this occurs, clients become upset, resulting in organization and

customer disputes.

Credit Card Fraud – Online criminals may steal customer's debit/credit cards resulting

in unauthorized use.

("10 Inevitable Ecommerce Risks You Should Watch Out For", 2015 - 2019).

Operating System / System Software Threats

SCOPE faces the threat of misuse of its operating resources and user files.

Operating Systems Threats such as:

Worms: A type of malware that duplicates itself so that it can spread from computer to

computer. SCOPE is concerned that the organization's files could be modified or even

deleted completely. Then there is also the fear of additional malicious software being

injected into its computers.

Port Scanning: A means allowing hackers to detect system vulnerabilities for the

purpose of attacking the system.

Denial of Service: Prevents users from making lawful use of SCOPE's system.

Program Threats: Often, system threats are used to unleash program threats on the

organization's entire network (Program Attack). These threats consist of Virus,

Trojan Horse, Trap Door, and Logic Bomb.
