Diversity and Cultural Factors in Psychology
Psychological Disorder Paper: Depression
Depression is not a one size fits all disorder especially when speaking in a cross-cultural
sense. In cross-cultural research on depression performed by psychologist Yulia Chentsova-
Dutton, she uses an astronomy example to compare to the culturally diverse way that symptoms
of depression display. “It’s the same universal experience of suffering, the same black vastness
above our heads dotted with bright and dim lights. However, when we look at the night sky, as
with the expression of depression around the world, we might notice some stars and miss others
depending on where we are “Ludden, D. PHD. (2017). Depression has been studied by the
World Health Organization and deemed that there are some universally exhibited symptoms of
depression (such as ideation of suicide and loss of enjoyment or sleep) as well as some more
culturally specific symptoms (such as feelings of guilt and worthlessness). Depression includes
Physical symptoms as well as motivational, behavioral, and emotional change. It is a disorder
that runs rampant in the United States but is not a factor of significance in eastern cultures.
Additionally, The United States has a much higher lifetime prevalence rate for
Depression/anxiety disorders at 30 percent where other countries like China, at less than five
percent, have significantly lower rates. Studies show that at some point in every Americans
life, they will experience a major depressive episode. Similar experiences are only reported by
two percent of their Chinese counters. Ludden, D., PHD. (2017).
, Primary Culture represented at A New Beginning
The United States is known as the melting pot of cultures, because of this, A New Beginnings
offers a safe environment for individuals across all cultures. Located in Scottsdale, Arizona
the population is 34,390 and of that population, approximately 52% is white or Caucasian
decent. The Hispanic community is also represented within the relative vicinity with about
34% of the total population. In addition to local residence, this organization assists many
individuals who do not live within the state. The median household earnings are lower than
average for the state of Arizona at $52,313 (Zip code 85251 (2021). After evaluation of the
location data, it can be concluded that a majority of the culture represented at this facility
would be middle to low- income Caucasian or Latin Americans.
Symptoms of Depression and Variances of Interpretation Cross-Culturally.

depression draw parallels across cultures including gender (women are at higher risk for
depression), unemployment or events. Universally, depressive episodes tend to revolve around
loss. The interpretation of loss and how the individual progress through their depressions differs
across cultures. Pogosyan, M., Ph.D. (2017, December 06)
An example is given be David Levine on how drastic simple cultural differences can change the
individuals outlook, “Punjabi women who have recently immigrated to the UK and given birth
