Assignment 4: Business Ethics
P4:

In this task I will be discussing the ethical concerns facing the communities in which a
business operates. The business I have chosen to discuss is the NHS. The national health
service refers to the government-funded medical and health care services that everyone
living in the UK can use without being asked to pay the full cost of the service.

There are a few different communities that could face different ethical concerns. For
example:

 Local communities
 Regional and national areas
 Global communities

Local Communities:
A local community is a group of interacting people sharing an environment. The NHS has a
national important and their activities have an important significance to local communities.
When a business like the NHS operates within a locality, there are always ethical concerns.

The local community could have ethical concerns when the NHS has to build a new facility
like a hospital. With the current situation in the world, this is very likely to happen. The global
pandemic of Coronavirus has brought many worries to everyone. In Wales, the worst area
for the virus is in Newport at the Royal Gwent hospital. With resources and facilities running
low, there may be a need to build a new area of the hospital which could take up a large
area of the community. Although this would bring more job vacancies and new opportunities
to the area, there are a few negative aspects.

I believe the main concern from the local community would be the thought of how much
room the new facility would take up and how it would affect other local businesses and
house in that area. A new hospital building would need to have easy access and an area for
people to park. It would cause a lot of disruption in the local area. People with homes nearby
the new construction may be against the idea as it would hugely affect them. It would cause
a lot of noise due to the building and possible demolition to buildings. Some people may be
concerned with the habitats of animals that could be ruined from the construction.

There could be number of steps that could be taken to improve the corporate responsibly if
this new building was to happen. The construction of a new hospital would cause a lot of
noise so there could be remedies for this offered to local residents for the disruption. The
local residents could be offered a compensation or to block most of the noise out, they could
be offered to make changes to their homes to help them e.g. double-glazed windows. The
new hospital could be invading people’s privacy at their houses if it was close to a local
residential area, again the government could offer to make changes to their homes to
prevent this from happening.

On the other hand, there are some benefits for the local community if there was a new
hospital in the local area. A new hospital building would open a lot of job vacancies for the
local community, not only for nurses and doctors but for other vacancies that don’t need as
many qualifications such as cooks, cleaners, etc. that help towards keeping the business
running. It also opens for vacancies for volunteers. It would also take a lot of pressure from
original hospitals with a new building available to the local community. It would allow for
patients to be seen to quicker with more employees at the hospital.
