EU Law Booklet
2017-18
Semester II
(First 10 Lectures)
1
,INTRODUCTION
European Union law is one 30 credit module which is examined by one exam at the end of
the course (students taking LW 2241 who are here for one semester only are subject to
separate arrangements). In the first semester, you will be introduced to the institutional
structure of the European Union and the role of the institutions in the legislative process. You
will also examine the fundamental principles of European Union law—its supremacy over
national law, its relationship to individual citizens and its enforcement by the Court of Justice
of the European Union (CJEU).
For this year, the module will also consider some of the legal consequences of the UK
Referendum decision to leave the European Union (Brexit). Where relevant, possible
changes to existing UK law and practice will be highlighted. Throughout the year we will
provide an update and analysis of the Brexit negotiations through Blackboard.
UNTIL THE UK FORMALLY LEAVES THE EUROPEAN UNION, EU LAW REMAINS
BIDNING ON THE UK AND UK COURTS HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO GUARANTEE EU
TREATY RIGHTS.
In Semester 2 you will consider the construction of the Internal Market: the free movement of
goods, services, persons and capital within the European Union.
This booklet contains Course Information relating to whole Module. In addition the lecture
materials and tutorials for Semester 1 are also included. The teaching material for Semester
2 will be made available at the start of Semester 2.

while studying the modules and you will be required to bring the book with you to
lectures and tutorials.
PERIODICALS
You are encouraged to engage in your own research and read beyond the basic text book
reading. Articles on European Union law can be found in many United Kingdom legal
journals, but there are a number of specialist journals devoted entirely to the subject of
European law and these provide the best starting point for your own reading in the subject:
Common Market Law Review (CMLRev)
European Law Journal (ELJ)
European Law Review (ELRev)
European Public Law (EPL)
Legal Issues of Economic Integration (LIEI)
