Business
By: Hanan Abanur
,Hanan Abanur
Introduction:
In my assignment, I will be exploring two contrasting businesses, and how they maintain a
successful business. The businesses I will be discussing are Thorpe Park and Oxfam. Thorpe
Park is a theme park that provides chill seeking entertainment for different age groups while
Oxfam is an international organisation focusing on the alleviation of global poverty.
Throughout, this assignment I will be comparing between the two businesses and will be
discussing their sector, ownership, liabilities, scope, size and why they are successful. The
report will also give information on how both businesses are influenced by stakeholders as
well as exploring the organisation structures, aims and objectives. The report will also
discuss the internal, external and competitive environment as well as the techniques to
undertake a situational analysis, explore how the market structure and influences on supply
and demand affect the pricing and output decisions for a given business. The last part of the
report will give information on how innovation and enterprise contribute to the success of a
business.
Thorpe Park:
Here I will be giving a brief overview on the business my assignment will be about. The
business I have chosen to do my assignment to be about is Thorpe Park .Thorpe Park is a
public limited company .I will be discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the
business and the different ways the business goes about it. Thorpe Park is a theme park
resort that operates with merlin entertainment. Thorpe Park is known as the largest
European entertainment theme park in the whole of Europe. Thorpe Park was first made on
24th of May 1979. According to statistics in 2016 Thorpe Park have had over 1.8 visitors per
annum. Thorpe Park has maintained a successful business though out their history and
continue to do so. In the year 2019 Thorpe Park have had over 2 million visitors with the
costs of £30 per tickets. Thorpe Park have over 30 different facilities within the park which
include indoors and outdoors. They have over 200 employees that work on their premises.
Below is a couple pictures of Thorpe Park.
Oxfam
Oxfam is the other business I will be discussing. Oxfam is a charity organisation that
operates worldwide. Oxfam is a confederation of 19 independent charitable organizations
focusing on the alleviation of global poverty. Oxfam operates in countries like Syria, Iran,
and India etc. Places where their country is in war and need help. Oxfam was first founded in
1942 and led by Oxfam International. It is a major non-profit group with an extensive
collection of operations. Winnie Byanyima has been the executive director of Oxfam. Oxfam
has maintained a successful charity over the years due to their aims and goals.

P1: Explain the features of two contrasting businesses
Thorpe Park Ownership and liability
Thorpe Park is a successful businesses that has grown drastically over the past years. Thorpe
Park is owned by a British based company named Merlin Entertainment. The shareholders
have limited liability meaning they only lose the money they have invested in the business
and their personal assets are safe. One disadvantage of Thorpe Park being a public limited
company is that their accounts are published yearly and anybody even the competition can
see how well they are doing. One advantage for Thorpe Park being a public limited company
is that they can raise finance for their business by selling shares to new investors. This is
seen as being the main benefit they have, as they will have access to large sum of money to
invest in new rides and restaurants etc. (see bibliography 2).
Purpose of Thorpe Park
The purpose of Thorpe Park is to provide family entertainment and leisure for all their
customers .They do this by providing their individuals with services such as rides,
restaurants, shops, games, hosting events, educational visits. Thorpe Parks main purpose is
maintain customers by keeping them pleased as they want everyone who has visited there
park a memorable and enjoyable time. Thorpe Park’s vision is to become worldwide leader
in branded, location based, and family entertainment. The purpose of Thorpe Park is to
provide entertainment services for their customers to ensure they have satisfied customers
to maintain a successful business.
Scope of Thorpe Park
Thorpe Park has over 200 permanent workers which work at the theme park every day for it
to keep running on a day to day basis. However on seasonal occasions theirs expand in the
amount of staff with an increase of over 1,300 temporary staff supporting the park. This
shows how the park needs a wide range of different employers in order for it to operate.
Thorpe Park operates on a local scope because even though people travel from all around
the world from different cities to visit the park they only have one location where the park is
located which is in Surrey.
Size
Thorpe Park has a large size as their business contains over a large number of staff and
customers .Thorpe Park has over 200 permanent workers and 1,300 temporary staff
supporting the park on a seasonal basis. The reasons why Thorpe Park has a wide range of
staff is because they operate over 30 different rides and the theme park also contains
restaurants, stores, games and gift shops which it is important and necessary to have that
many staff .
Sector
Thorpe Park falls in the tertiary sector which means they provide a service to their guest.
This is evident as they offer a wide range of services and support of all kinds to consumers
such as rides, merchandise, hotels, games, car parking.

Oxfam ownership and liability
Oxfam is an international organisation which consists of 14 organisation working over 100
countries. Oxfam is a not-for-profit organisation in other words a charity with 70 years of
experience, working with partners in 94 countries worldwide to raise money and support
those in need. It is a global movement of people who share the belief that, in a world rich in
resources, poverty should not be happening. Oxfam has a limited liability meaning that the
trustees of the company are not liable for the company’s debts or liabilities. A disadvantage
to Oxfam operating as a charity is that they are dependent on donors to donate contribution
of funds. This can create problems as if there is insufficient funds received then Oxfam
cannot achieve their short or long term goals.
Purpose
The purpose of Oxfam is to help create lasting solutions to the injustice of poverty. As they
are a part of a global movement for change, which empowers people to create a future that
is secure, and free from poverty (see bibliography 5). Oxfam’s major purpose is to support
people world ride, provide shelter, food and economic support for poor people to meet
their aim to stop poverty.
Scope
Oxfam has over more than 250 staff to run its business. Oxfam operates on an international
scope as they work in more than 90 different countries. This means that Oxfam can try and
help people from all around the world to accomplish its goals and visions. For example
Oxfam is currently working with Syria to help deal with their crisis. (See bibliography 3)
Size
The size of a business refers to the amount of employers working at a company or
organisation. In regards to Oxfam we can say that it is a large size business. In an article by
the Guardian dated 25. Oct. 2013 stated that “Oxfam GB employs 5,300 people worldwide
and works with more than 22,000 volunteers” (see bibliography 6), this indicates that Oxfam
is also a large size business.
Sector
Oxfam also falls under the tertiary sector as they provide services for those who are in need.
Instead of just selling products, it also provides a service to other charities. It does this by
selling cloths at a very cheap prices. Oxfam also provides different services such as cloths,
food and education to those who they need help.
