Week 2: Database Search

,Database research engine is a search engine that operates on material stored in a digital database.
I compared hypertension on Google Scholar and PubMed. I choose to conduct my database
research on hypertension because I have taken care of hypertensive patients in the past.

In the google scholar search engine, I typed hypertension and I got about 2,750,000 article results
which were a lot of article on hypertension. I narrowed it down to hypertension in pregnancy but
there were about 1,830,000 results without any time limit. I narrowed it down to hypertension in
pregnancy with the published date from 2014 to 2018 and I had about 77,500 article results. One
article that interests me the most was from the Current Opinion in Cardiology, they explain the
importance of blood pressure to both the pregnant mother and her child. This article explains
how high blood pressure is mainly responsible for this adverse outcome when associated with
preeclampsia (Raio, Bolla, & Baumann, 2015)

My second research was with PubMed. I typed hypertension, and it came up with 12,917 results
from the U.S. National Library of Medicine which is a lot of articles. I narrowed my topic to
hypertension in pregnancy there were about 2,751 results. The article topic range from
Preeclampsia, Eclampsia, Preeclampsia-self-care to Preeclampsia-genetic home reference and
many more. I typed gestational hypertension and it narrowed it down to 221 articles. I noticed
there was a fewer article on this website with specific health topics or sub-topics. PubMed
explains Preeclampsia in detail, it presents the cause, the symptoms, tests, and treatments. It
explains when one can experience this health situation during pregnancy.

I was unable to pick an article from Google scholar because it was broad. It did not narrow the
information to what I was expecting. I was able to pick an article from PubMed because it
narrowed down the article to a specific topic with the information I was looking for. The article I
researched on explain the disease, the causes, symptoms, exams, tests, and treatment opinion for
the health condition. This article has a reference which shows it is evidence based practices. I
prefer PubMed because it narrowed my search down and gave me the privilege to focuses on less
article.

Database search facilitates my scholarly work because it helps me to obtain research work,
credible resources, and evidence-based research. The information I got from this source help me
to back up my claims with valid proof and points. In nursing work and evidence-based practice,
using database research help me to build more knowledge in nursing as I gather information.
Database search enhances my learning and self-development.

○ Hey everyone,
I decided to compare PubMed and Google Scholar to see which was
the better search engine. I've never heard of PubMed prior to this
assignment, but I have used Google Scholar for researching articles in
the past. Both databases are free full text and journals. I was able to
customize the publication dates to narrow down the more current
articles. I selected the years of 2014-2019 because articles within the
last 5 years are more credible. When narrowing down the years on
PubMed, I was able to select many filters to modify the search. When
using Google Scholar I was only able to modify the publication years
and sort buy dates or relevance. At this point I started leaning towards
PubMed as a better search engine. I researched the topic "Heart
Failure", a broad topic I know, but I noticed a distinct difference
between the databases; PubMed had 38,000 articles compared to
Google Scholar's 68,000 articles. The number of articles was alarming,
but not enough to sway my intrigue from PubMed. The article I chose
from PubMed is called, Manifestations and Mechanisms of Myocardial
Lipotoxicity in Obesity. The article is about heart failure and the many
contributing factors. Accumulation of excess lipid in non-adipose cells
of the cardiovascular system can cause cell dysfunction and cell death,
a process known as lipotoxicity ( Sletten AC, Peterson LR, Schaffer
JE. J Intern Med, 2018). When using a database for scholarly work it's
important to have credible, specific facts; PubMed offers those filters
for research papers, discussion posts and projects. I don't use
databases too often in everyday life and I honestly don't look at the
credibility of the site giving me the information. Using these databases
for scholarly work is only a stepping stone before using them for
