Introduction:

In this piece of work I will be discussing the importance of factors and how they influence trends on the travel and tourism industry. Along with this, I will also be
discussing and analysing the impacts that two operations have had to face and how it has effected them.

What is a ‘trend’? :

A trend is a combination of facts and statistics that show a pattern. This pattern could’ve been effected by numerous factors such as a terrorist attack in the
country which would’ve lead to less tourists and ultimately less income. Trends change a lot and help people to find out why there is less tourists and income in a
country.

P5 - Trend One: Greater Flexibility Of Travelers

Describe: 89% of people have access to the internet from the comfort of their own homes. This allows a greater flexibility for all types of travellers to book the
holiday. They could chose to buy their own independent holiday and chose what they want by themselves or they could buy a package holiday through an online
travel agent – the choice is theirs. Furthermore, they can also chose to get 24/7 help with their bookings as many travel agents offer the choice for online chats or
phone calls or emails that customers can use to contact them with. Many people often book holidays online as they can do it whenever they want, have the
option to look at more choice and reviews and have the option to chose the best deal suited to them.

M2- How this is affecting the T&T industry.

A few years ago, when less people had internet access, they would usually book package holidays through a call centre or a highstreets travel agencies. Often
times these services cost a lot of money and people felt like they couldn’t afford it, therefore less people were booking holidays abroad and if they were then it
was to popular country’s that offered these deals such as Spain however now people have the ability to book wherever they want to visit as there is a broader
range available. This range is due to the internet and it’s services. Because there has been an increase of online travel agents, many people see this as a more
convenient option instead of booking over the phone with a call centre or to go to a high street travel agency. In Great Britain alone, there has been a rise of over
2000 tour operators which has risen since 2015. This is because of the demand to travel abroad to somewhere new and somewhat cheaper than what it used to
be. Furthermore, it is also a good thing that there are more travel agencies as this means there is more jobs available for people which they can then use the
money they earn to go abroad and to be put into the economy. Many countries are now developing their services and attractions due to this increase in tourism
which is down to greater flexibility of travel available, a good example of this is Dubai and other middle eastern countries such as Qatar who have developed due
to an increase in tourism. Overall, greater flexibility of travellers is a good trend as many businesses gain more income because of this. It has also been predicted
that high-street travel agents will be a rare thing to see on the street in about five years due to the internet providing more flexibility for travellers.

, Trend Two: More Independent Travelers

Describe: Independent travellers has become a popular occurrence over recent years. This is mainly because due to social media, cheap holidays and flights that it
works out to be a better deal. Many people also wish to feel independent and wish to challenge themselves and overcome it. There is a lot of information online
available about solo and independent travel which is useful to people wishing to seek this opportunity. Many countries are now becoming somewhat safer than they
were before and the Government have a webpage dedicated to information about traveling to each country of their choosing.

M2- How this is affecting the T&T industry.

With the rise of independent travellers, many of these have been turning to online travel agencies and tour operators in order to find a better package or deal for
them. They can also get opinions and reviews available on their websites or on request which is good because they may want to feel more secure in the option that
they are choosing. Furthermore, with the rise of social media, more and more people are feeling inspired to travel and experience something new. This has affected
the travel and tourism industry in a positive way as countries and attractions are gaining more popularity which results in more income and jobs available overall.
However, some tourists disrespect sites which cause a bad reputation with them and thus make locals feel more dislike towards travellers. Many people also chose to
travel independently because it works out cheaper and they can get last minute deals. Because of this, there have been more businesses such as low budget airlines
and other services that has come into fruition. These low-budget airlines offer discounted seats to passengers, thus meaning they are more likely to book a holiday
with them as they will be tempted by the price. This then leads to more business development offers, more income to the country and companies providing the
services and more jobs. Many people also travel independently for work too, therefore business class travel is becoming more popular. Business class travel is a good
way for the airlines to make money because many businesses want their employees to be as relaxed and refreshed as possible on and after the flight. It is particularly
good as the amenity’s offered are beneficial for them too – and you wouldn’t find them in economy class. The rise of independent travellers has increased to 56%.

Trend three: Greater Opportunity For Adventure And Alternative Destinations

Describe: Due to flights becoming increasingly popular, safe and a cheaper way to travel, many people are choosing to venture further and further to places they
wouldn’t normally think to go. There has also been an increase in independent tours to places that would normally be off limits, for example you can book a tour that
takes you to visit the aftermath of Chernobyl, which is something that is not usually offered to the public if you were to book in a travel agency.

M2- How this is affecting the T&T industry.

These opportunities offer more competition within the travel and tourism industry as they are getting more and more competitive with one another and don’t want to
loose customer appeal. Because of this, many companies are lowering their prices in order to get more traction and to gain more customers overall as if they provide
good service then their company will gain more recognition. Many airlines are also in competition to get more customers and will not only do this by lowering their
prices but will also purchase the ability to fly and land in different destinations. This creates more of an impact with the airline as they will gain more customers as they
are wishing to go somewhere new and exciting. This will also increase tourism in that destination and cause them to gain a better income and thus meaning they have
the ability for the country to be able to develop, which will then keep the tourism coming in. Many larger companies are starting to rely on many smaller independent
companies, thus creating an interdependency between them. This is because, the smaller companies offer the attractions and other services that the bigger companies
(airlines, tour groups, etc.) rely on in order for tourists to want to visit that destination. The smaller companies also want more tourists to visit as they will make more
income because of the tourists. There have been many examples when smaller businesses have gone out of business due to lack of income due to tourism, for example
in Tunisia, they are finding it hard to keep business going due to the recent terrorist attacks that have happened in their country. This ultimately lead to the decline and
fall of the airline Monarch too, as this airline mainly flew to countries such as Tunisia but more and more people have stopped traveling there.
