Week 20 – Discussion and Abstract Section
Results – recap of last week
To tell the reader the findings of your studies.
Using a scatterplot to illustrate your findings.
Summarise your findings in text and illustrate it with figures. The figure is your
scatterplot.
Mention any relevant observations.
Don’t worry if the results you get aren’t what you expected.
When you report your correlation, always include the sign by saying whether it
is a positive or negative result.
Note that the FOMO variable doesn’t have a lot of range which will explain
why it might look a bit odd. Try to look for a cluster of the plots.
Refer to the lecture slide that shows you how to add a ‘Trendline’ to your
graph.
What to avoid in your results
Don’t interpret them here.
Don’t put any raw data here.
Don’t provide background information.
Don’t repeat yourself.
Figures should have some text underneath to explain what they are.
Discussion
This is where you interpret the theoretical implications of your results.
Give a recap of what the results are.
Mention any unresolved issues.
Compare your results to what other people have found in their studies. Was it
as expected or unexpected?
The structure of your discussion
Explain the meaning and state why it’s important to understanding the
findings.
State the study’s major findings.
Make suggestions for further research.
Acknowledge the study’s limitations.
