1. Henry VII was the first Tudor King; the founder of the Tudor dynasty. He married
Elizabeth of York, daughter of Edward IV and niece of Richard III.
2. Henry VII won the English throne from his Yorkist adversary Richard III at the Battle of
Bosworth that ended the War of the Roses. His reign was troubled by revolts.
3. Henry the VIII was born in 1491 at Greenwich Palace.
4. Henry VIII’s mother Elizabeth of York died when he was 11.
5. Henry VIII established the Church of England and the Royal Navy. He increased the size
of the Navy from 5 to 53 ships. Henry VIII’s flagship, the Mary Rose, was launched in
1511. The remains of the Mary Rose lie in the Portsmouth Naval Museum.

older brother Arthur, who died of sickness at 15 years old.
8. Disappointed at not having a son measures were taken to declare the marriage
invalid; Anne Boleyn was crowned Queen a week later.
9. Anne Boleyn was Queen of England from 1533-1536.
10. Anne and Henry VIII had a daughter – Elizabeth I.
11. Anne’s sister, Mary, was known to be the King’s mistress.
12. Anne Boleyn was accused of witchcraft and treason; accusations which were almost
certainly false. She was arrested and beheaded.
13. She died on 19 May 1536.
It is recorded that prior to being beheaded, there on the scaffolds, she delivered a speech: "I am come
hither to accuse no man, nor to speak anything of that, whereof I am accused and condemned to die,
but I pray God save the king and send him long to reign over you, for a gentler nor a more merciful
prince was there never: and to me he was ever a good, a gentle and sovereign lord," she said, adding,
"I take my leave of the world and of you all, and I heartily desire you all to pray for me. O Lord have
mercy on me, to God I commend my soul."
14. Jane Seymour (also known as Jane Semel) was the only wife to give Henry VIII a son
and heir.
15. Jane Seymour died only two weeks after giving birth to Edward VI. She died of
postnatal complications.
16. Jane Seymour was the only wife of the King to receive a Queen’s funeral. She was
buried in a tomb at Windsor Castle and would become the only Wife to be buried with
Henry VIII.
