Exchange theory: George Homans and Peter Blau
Social exchange is het sociale proces onderliggend aan relaties tussen individuen en
in groepen
Een belangrijk figuur in de exchange theory is George Homans. Hij bracht de focus
terug naar individuen en kleine-groepsgedrag, in plaats van macrostructuren en
organisaties. Hij zei dat individuele motieven verklaren waarom instituties bestaan
(ze coördineren de motieven van de individuen).
In tegenstelling tot Durkheim, die zei dat het gedrag wordt verklaard door een sociale
kracht gerelateerd aan ander sociale krachten (migratie, educatie etc.), zei Homans
dat sociologie ontstaat door individuen in interactie met andere individuen (in kleine
groepen of organisaties).
Sociaal gedrag is een manifestatie van individueel gemotiveerd gedrag en is
onafhankelijk van de historische, culturele en georganiseerde context waarin
individuen zich gedragen.
Homans zei “the individuals behavior is a function of its payoffs, of its outcomes,
whether rewarding or punishing, and they hold good whether or not the payoffs are
provided by the non-human environment or by other human beings”. Waarmee
bedoeld wordt dat we menselijk gedrag en interactie alleen kunnen begrijpen als we
het zien als exchange behavior (we wisselen meningen, advies, vriendschappen etc.
aan elkaar uit).
o Mensen worden beoordeeld op wat ze geven in social exchange en op wat ze
krijgen van anderen.
Homans nam de behavioristische benadering van Skinner mee en creërde een actie-
beloning/straf oriëntatie bij sociaal gedrag. Hoe waardevoller het resultaat van een
actie is, hoe sneller hij deze actie opnieuw zal doen.
Social exchange wordt gekarakteriseerd door power imbalances, waarbij de ene
persoon in de interactie meer uit de exchange verkrijgt dan de andere persoon.
(soms zijn mensen minder goed in de ene activiteit, maar verdienen dit terug door
goed te zijn in een andere activiteit)
Wat een persoon geeft in social exchange is hun power.
o Power hangt af van de mogelijkheid om in beloningen te voorzien die
waardevol zijn, omdat deze schaars zijn. Dit heet de scarcity value, dit wordt
bepaald door de relatie tussen de voorraad en de vraag.
Door social exchange ontstaat sociaal kapitaal. Je netwerken die je opbouwt heten je
sociaal kapitaal, deze kan je gebruiken om je doel te bereiken. Weak + strong ties etc.
Peter Blau borduurt voort op het werk van Homans.
Hij ontdekte dat het werk van werknemers ook afhing van social exchange en het
vertrouwen, dit zie je tegenwoordig terug in een grote hoeveelheid teamwork op de
werkvloer.
Social exchange zorgt ook voor een verschil in status, een persoon kan in een relatie
meer power hebben dan de ander. Iemand kan je bvb iets schuldig zijn.
