Explain why the Munich Putsch failed. You could discuss:

The role of the army and state police
The Bavarian leaders

You must also use information of your own. [12]

One reason for the Munich Putsch of 1923 failing was the role of the army and state police.
For example, the army barracks refused to join the rebellion and stayed loyal to the Weimar
government. Hitler did not yet have enough influence to coerce the army into supporting hi
m. He was still unknown to many people- many of the 3,000 in the beer hall did not know w
ho he was. This meant the putsch failed because the Nazis were easily overpowered when t
hey marched on Munich and as a result, the authorities killed 14 Nazis and 4 policemen.

A second reason for the failure of the Munich Putsch was the Bavarian leaders. They were
supposed to be on Hitler’s side but on november 8th when Hitler took over the meeting, they
stayed loyal to the government and betrayed Hitler. Von Kahr and Von Lossow were but in
the back but Ludendorff let them go as they claimed they wanted to call their wives but
instead they went to organise resistance againsnt hHitler, contacting the army. As a
result, the police and army confronted them and shots were fired, nazis supporters and SA
were scattered.

A final reason for the failure of the Putsch was that Hitler was heavily outgunned. He had
only 2000 rifles buy many of these had been secretly supplied by the German army without
firing pins. This meant that they couldnt fire back when the police and the army shot fire. As
a result of this, Hitler was capture and put on trial where he was found guilty of treason and
sentenced to 5 years of prison.
