Mary Queen of Scots’ Arrival in England

- Mary was a danger to Elizabeth for numerous reasons. Catholics in England wanted Elizabeth
replaced with Mary because they believed Elizabeth to be illegitimate

- Especially after Mary married Lord Darnley, she had a stronger claim to the throne than
Elizabeth, due to Darnley's own claim to the throne

- Mary was also actively showing that she had a claim to England

- Imprisoning Mary would keep her from causing trouble and inciting rebellions against
Elizabeth

- Letting Mary go was not really a viable option for Elizabeth because of all the issues that
Mary was very likely to cause and executing Mary would have turned her into a Martyr for
the Catholic cause which, at the time, could have had worse effects than releasing Mary
would have

- The challenge Mary posed was great

- She was one of Elizabeth's main issues and an issue that would not go away

- Mary had a great deal of support from Catholics in Scotland, England and overseas in
countries such as France

- Mary was also not passive, even when imprisoned she was involved in plots against
Elizabeth

- There was not really any solution to the issue which would completely alleviate the threat
that Mary and her supporters posed

- Elizabeth could not do what Mary wished when Mary arrived in England. There was no
solution which could fit both of their needs

- Even though Mary was under Elizabeth's control whilst in England, she was still a figurehead
for Catholic rebellions against Elizabeth

- No matter where Mary went, she was always going to cause major political and religious
issues for Elizabeth
