Hoorcollege 1 – Algemene introductie
Diergeneeskunde houdt zich bezig met gezondheid en ziekte bij dieren, o.a.:
• Pathobiologie
• Vergelijkende pathologie
• Landbouwwetenschappen (VB. veeteelt, zootechniek)
• Milieuhygiëne en wilde fauna
Diergeneeskunde houdt zich dus niet alleen
bezig met productie, gezondheid en welzijn
van het dier, maar ook met de gezondheid en
welzijn van de mens.
One health: diergezondheid, milieugezondheid
en volksgezondheid in samenhang.
Ontwikkelingen in veterinaire volksgezondheid
Fase 1: Georganiseerde dierziektebestrijding.
Doel: Voedsel, trekkracht, transport.
→ Europa in de 19e eeuw, ontwikkelingslanden bevinden zich nog in deze fase evenals ontwikkelde
landen zonder veterinaire infrastructuur.
Voedselzekerheid was erg belangrijk (de wortels van de huidige diergeneeskunde).
Armoedebestrijding ging hand in hand met zorg voor voedsel. In deze periode (18e / 19e eeuw) begon
de oprichting van diergeneeskunde scholen in Europa.
Fase 2: Vleeskeuring en zoönosencontrole
Doel: Consumentenbescherming en bijdrage aan
vermindering van infectieziektenlast voor de mens.
In deze periode (20e eeuw) was voedselveiligheid een belangrijk begrip.
Fase 3: Gezondheidswetenschappen
Doel: Garanties voor hoogwaardig en veilig voedsel,
welzijn mens en dier en milieuzorg.
→ Komt voor in een beperkt aantal landen met geïndustrialiseerde voedselproductie (welvarende
landen).
In deze periode (21e eeuw) zijn van belang: gezond voer, gezonde dieren, gezond voedsel,
dierenwelzijn, milieubescherming, ‘’novel food’’, ‘’fast food’’, ‘’slow food’’, nutraceuticals etc.
De consument bepaalt de markt. Hierbij speelt voedselacceptatie een grote rol (aantal sterren,
biologisch? etc.).
