De lever draagt in grote mate bij aan de homeostase. De lever is op cellulair niveau vergelijkbaar
maar er zijn qua bouw en ligging wel diersoortverschillen (net als de aan- of afwezigheid van de
galblaas). De in de lever geproduceerde en omgezette stoffen worden aan het bloed afgegeven en
geproduceerd gal kan tijdelijk opgeslagen in de galblaas (in sommige gevallen dus direct richting de
dunne darm → rat, duif, walvis, papegaai en paard hebben geen galblaas).
