Principles of Health Education

The Stages of Change Model

The “Stages of Change” Model was created by Prochaska and Di Clemente. It is widely
accepted and referred to in substance misuse services. E.g smoking or illegal
substances. This process of behaviour
change consists of five stages.

Stage one: Thinking about change
This is where people become aware of
the existing problem and are seriously
considering overcoming it, but they
haven’t yet made any commitment to
making a change.

Stage two: Planning for Change
Those who have reached this stage are
planning on starting to change in the next month as they made a failed attempt ij the last
year.

Stage Three: Making a change
Individual's condition their behaviour, environment or experiences to help overcome
their problems. This requires a lot of willpower and commitment.

Stage Four: Maintaining a change
Individuals put time and work to prevent relapse and consolidate the gains attained
during action. E.g therapy.

Stage Five: Relapsing
Often, many people fall into relapse and have to repeat the cycle over and over again
until they achieve their goal (changed behaviour).

Health Belief Model

The Health Belief Model (HBM) is a psychological model that helps to explain and give
a prediction of health behaviours. This is carried out by focusing on the attitudes or
beliefs of individuals.
