Mediawijsheid: Waarom zo belangrijk? (+CW SAMENVATTING!!)

De gemedialiseerde samenleving, er zijn kansen en risico’s. Maar er komt wel steeds
meer kennis en aandacht over die media.
‘Mediawijsheid is het geheel van kennis, vaardigheden en mentaliteit, dat is nodig om
bewust, kritisch en actief te participeren in een complexe, veranderlijke en fundamenteel
gemedialiseerde samenleving.’

Media-educatie: vaak gezien als een interventie om ongewenste media-effecten tegen te
gaan. De focus ligt vaak op het stimuleren van bewustzijn en kennis. Die educatie zorgt
voor bewustzijn en kennis en dat leidt tot kritische reflectie en mediawijs gedrag.

Maar het gedrag staat niet altijd gelijk aan hun kennis.  er is een kloof tussen
mediawijsheid & mediawijze gedrag. Maar waarom? Dit heeft te maken met de
eigenschappen van media. Ook de eigenschappen van jongeren spelen nog een rol (het
brein ontwikkelt tot 25 jaar, vermogen om impulsieve reacties aan te passen,
zelfregulatie is nodig).

 de motivatie en vaardigheid om eigen mediagedrag te reguleren zijn beperkt.

Wat is er voor nodig om mediawijze kennis om te zetten in mediawijs gedrag?

Versterk de competenties die iemand nodig heeft om zelfstandig mediawijze keuzes te
maken (empowerment/boosting).

Media Empowerment Model:

Weten (kennen) + willen (motivatie) + kunnen (vaardigheden)  mediawijs gedrag. Dat
is een mogelijkheid, maar dan moet de omgeving/platform/… het nog toelaten. Bv.
privacy online.

Zelfcontrole is moeilijk, maar niet onmogelijk. De impulsieve reactie is dominanter, en
wint sneller. Maar de gecontroleerde reactie wint als er micropauze kan zijn. Het
kritische reflectieproces kan er dus zijn als we een gelegenheid hebben om even te
passeren. Emotie labeling & mindfulness is nodig.

Implementatie-intentie (denk-reactie): Als …, dan …
Door het maken van een simpel als-dan plan wordt het makkelijker om bepaald
mediawijs gedrag uit te voeren. Door oefening en herhaling kan het een gewoonte
worden.

Zelf-overtuiging: versterkt de intrinsieke motivatie om gedrag aan te passen. Zelf-
overtuiging maakt gebruikt van cognitieve dissonantie, dat is de onaangename spanning
die iemand ervaart bij tegenstrijdige overtuigingen die in strijd gaan met de eigen
overtuiging.
