“De milieuschade die Nederland oploopt door de uitstoot van schadelijkestoffen bedraagt jaarlijks 31 miljard euro, wat gelijkstaat aan 4,5 procent van
het bruto binnenlands product (BBP).” Dat concluderen onderzoekers van het
Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving (PBL) vrijdag.
Wanneer we het hebben over de milieuschade hebben we het al snel over de actuele
milieuproblemen in de hele wereld. We hebben het dan over de klimaatverandering
(opwarming van de aarde), opmaken van fossiele brandstoffen en milieuvervuiling.
Als we inzoomen op Nederland zie je dat Rotterdam samen met Amsterdam de stad is met
de meest vervuilde lucht. Dat stelt het Longfonds bij de aanvang van haar nieuwe campagne
'Gezonde Lucht'.
De oorzaak is onder meer de industrie in Rotterdam. De eerste container in de haven was
het begin van de globalisering in Rotterdam, dit is het proces van het ontstaan van steeds
meer samenhang in de wereld. Globalisering wordt door veel Europese landen als kans
gezien voor economische groei en om welvaart te bieden aan onontwikkelde landen. Maar
door het begin van de globalisering is het milieu juist achteruitgegaan.
De grootste CO2-uitstoters zijn de kolencentrales van Uniper en Engie op de Maasvlakte, de
olieraffinaderijen van Shell, ExxonMobil en BP, afvalverwerker AVR en de gascentrale
Enecogen. Samen zijn die goed voor 80 procent van de Rotterdamse CO2-emissie.
