Healthcare Financing
A. Compare the U.S. healthcare system with the healthcare system of Great Britain, Japan,
Germany, or Switzerland, by doing the following:
1. Identify one country from the following list whose healthcare system you will
compare to the U.S. healthcare system: Great Britain, Japan, Germany, or Switzerland.
I will be comparing Switzerland to the U.S healthcare system.
2. Compare access between the two healthcare systems for children, people who
are unemployed, and people who are retired.
The healthcare system in the United States is known for its non-standard format
while Switzerland is known more for uniformity. Both healthcare systems are similar to
each other in some ways but different in others. Unlike the U.S, Switzerland is customer-
driven and offer universal coverage. There are many reasons why Switzerland is one of the
best healthcare systems in the world such as no one is denied coverage for pre-existing
conditions, the government subsidizes MHI for people with low income, patients have direct
access to all levels of care, allows patients to choose their own provider, and maternity
coverage is excellent (Yahoo,2019).
a. Discuss coverage for medications in the two healthcare systems.
In 2010, The United States passed The Affordable Care Act, to reduce the cost of
health insurance coverage for people who qualify and to eliminate industry practices that
include rescissionand denial of coverage due to pre-existing conditions(Health Insurance,
2021). One of the benefits of the care act is that a child can stay on their parent’s plan until
, they turn 26 years of age. Once you go over 26 you can apply for coverage and see if you
qualify for subsidies like Medicaid. Some children are covered by Medicaid, TRICARE, and
others are covered by the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) depending on the
needs of certain individuals. To access healthcare for people who are unemployed some area
able to receive Medicaid due to low income but most of the time they are without healthcare.
They can also see if they qualify for CHIP based on their income and daily size. To access
healthcare for people who are retired, they are eligible for Medicare once they reach the age
of 65. Medicare contains Part A which helps pay for some time at a skilled nursing facility,
inpatient care, hospice and home health. It also has Part B which helps pays for services such
as doctor visits and medical equipment (National Conference of State Legislatures, 2020).
Also, part D helps pay for drugs. It provides affordable prescription drug coverage to seniors
and people living with disabilities. They are covered with low and stable premiums. In the
United States, patients can access medicines a number of ways, including through employer-
sponsored health plan, a health insurance exchange plan or a program like Medicare or
Medicaid (Health Insurance, 2021). Prescription medication are prescribed by the
individual’s health care provider. Those who have insurance plans comes with prescription
drug coverage but doesn’t cover every medication. The individual is responsible to look up
their insurance plan about their formulary, which gives you a list of drugs that are covered
by the plan. The individual would have to make a co payment depending on what
classification of drug it is. Those who are getting over the counter medication would have to
pay out of pocket.
In Switzerland, residents have a Universal Health Care System. They buy insurance
for themselves and is required to do so. As for children, once they are born they must be
insured by their legal guardian. Within 3 months of birth, you have to take out health
