Ethical Principle Application

C304

College of Health Professions, Western Governors University

A1. Response to Scenario

As a nurse I strive to be kindhearted and empathetic to all of my patients. I would explain

to Mr. Newcomb that I respectfully cannot lie to his wife. I would also explain to him that I

would not stop him. I would explain to him that even though sneaking around is against my

decisions regardless if we do not see eye to eye on this particular arrangement. Prior to leaving

Mr. Newcomb’s room I would ensure him I am here to listen, support him and value whatever

decision he chooses.

2019, p.168)”. I carried out this principle by telling Mr. Newcomb that I am empathetic to his

feelings and encouraging him to make the decision that makes him happy. As his nurse it is my

job to keep his privacy and I assured him I would not harm him by telling his wife. He is alert

and oriented and of sound mind to make his own decisions. Nonmaleficence is “an ethical

principle stating the duty to not inflict harm (Cherry & Jacobs, 2019, p.168)”. I specifically
