Professional Roles and Values Task 2

Western Governors University

Ethical Principle Application

(A1) Describe how you would respond to Mr. Newcomb’s request.

I would respond to Mr. Newcomb by explaining to him that I would not lie on his

behalf to his wife. If he wanted to meet with his mistress, he would have to have a discussion

with his wife, or he would have to lie to her to get her to stay away from the hospital for a

while. It is against my personal morals and values to lie to patients and the families of patients.

(A2) Evaluate how you applied the principles of beneficence, non-maleficence,

autonomy, and justice to the scenario.

In this scenario I am showing beneficence by not rocking the boat within this patient’s

marriage. I would not want to be the reason that there is a problem in his marriage, and he

should consider how he wants to leave his relationship with his wife before seeing his mistress.

He should also understand that I will not impede on this plan, I will keep to myself and he can

take care of this himself. I also allowed him to make his own decision about what he would like

to do in this situation, so he knows that he has the autonomy to do so. His choices in this

situation is not going to change the way I care for him or the way I look at him while he is in my

care. In this case I am not causing harm by telling Mr. Newcomb that he needs to take care of

his personal affairs on his own. I did him justice by being open and honest with him from the

beginning about why I would not lie to his wife and help him bring his mistress into the hospital.
