Nursing Theory

Nursing theory aids to be a guide in which the nurse thinks and practices. Jean Watson’s

Human Caring Theory had helped to shape the nurse I am. There are four main fundamentals of

this theory: “human being, health, environmental/society, and nursing” (Nursing Theory, 2016).

Watson believes the main goal of nursing is caring and has come up with ten carative factors to

practice. These factors include, “(1) forming humanistic-altruistic value systems, (2) instilling

faith-hope, (3) cultivating a sensitivity to self and others, (4) developing a helping-trust

relationship, (5) promoting an expression of feelings, (6) using problem-solving for decision-

making, (7) promoting teaching-learning, (8) promoting a supportive environment, (9) assisting

with the gratification of human needs, and (10) allowing for existential-phenomenological forces

(Nurselabs, 2021).

At times following Watson’s can be challenging because as a nurse you are striving to

focus on caring for the patient as an individual instead of just treating their condition. Each

patient we encounter is different in their way and it is important as a nurse to not practice

roboticallly but customize the care experience in which the patient receives. This can be achieved

by paying attention to patients and their concerns and not just rushing in and out of the room

while providing care. Nurses who practice in this manner ensure that their patients receive the

utmost care which can have a long-lasting impression.

In practicing this theory in my nursing caring I can provide my patients with a caring and

compassionate setting. I take my time to listen to my patient’s fears and concerns and strive to

, put their mind at ease. The labor process can be a very vulnerable time in a women’s life and

having a strong caring nurse providing care for them can completely change the type of

experience they have. It is my responsibility to form a bond with my patients so they can trust me

with their private information regarding health issues that could have an impact on them as well

as their unborn child. In my practice, I must pay close attention to any changes in the mother’s

status as well as the fetus to prevent any harm from coming to either of them. Labor can be a very

stressful time and I as a nurse can help to educate the patient in the process and calm any

anxieties they may have. In my practice, I like to try and explain things to my patients early on so

they know things to expect and can feel in control of the birthing process.

Two Historical Nursing Figures

My first historical nursing figure is Florence Nightingale. Florence Nightingale is one of

the most influential nurses of all time and is well known as a key founder in nursing. Florence

Nightingale had a strong belief that a patient’s environment was key to bettering their health.

Florence strived to ease the suffering of injured soldiers whom she cared for. She also was a huge

advocate for the cleanliness of the environment in which patients were receiving care. The

second nurse I would like to discuss is Jean Watson. Jean Watson had strong beliefs that one’s

optimistic views, faith, and hope were key factors in a person’s health. Jean Watson’s views on

nursing have helped to shape the interactions and connections we make with our patients and the

impacts it may have on their recovery.

The main difference between these two nurses is that while Florence Nightingale

believed that a person’s surroundings were key to their health Jean Watson on the other hand

believed it was more the care and attitude of the nurse that made an impact. While both are very

different concepts they also share similarities by not focusing solely on the patient’s health

condition but more on external factors. Watson’s view on nursing was “nursing is a human
