A nursing theory that has influenced my values and goals was developed by Kristen M.

Swanson in 1993. It is the theory of caring, which states that, “Nursing is informed caring for the

wellbeing of others”. (Swanson, 1993) I have always been the type of person who strives to put

others’ before myself. This has been a strong part of my personality since I was young, which is

why I have always been drawn to a career in nursing. I see caring for others in a meaningful way

as one of the greatest gifts we can give to another human. It doesn’t matter who it is, or what we

may have in common. Caring is always something that is needed and appreciated.

1. Informed caring is carried out in nursing every day. We, as nurses, are informed by

always continuing in our education. How we do things is ever-changing, as there
is
always new evidence on how to improve. Nurses take their knowledge and utilize
it in

ways that will help the patient. Informed caring is carried out in daily tasks,
medication
administration, education to the patient, and going the extra mile to assist them in
healing

and being able to perform those tasks for themselves. Nurses will sometimes go
several

hours without using the restroom, skip lunch breaks, and not drink adequate water

because they are providing those cares to their patients. This is truly an act of

selflessness, but we as nurses need to make it a priority to care for ourselves too.

Sometimes, the patient isn’t able to heal, and nurses use informed caring to
provide

comfort as the patient passes on.

, 2. I am a charge nurse in a critical care hospital. I am able to see and be a part of
many

aspects of nursing. As a small rural hospital, we don’t have different floors or
specialties. We

are expected to care for all patients that are within our ability. I utilize informed
caring by

always making sure that I am learning and researching things that could benefit the
patients.

It is my responsibility to always do my best to give great care. It is up to me to see
that they

are comfortable and that the physician’s orders are being carried out.

Clara Barton started out her career as a school teacher at the age of 15 and even started

her own school at one point. She found her true calling as a nurse as she volunteered on the

battlefields of the American Civil War. Clara assisted in taking care of the soldiers who were

injured. She also delivered supplies to surgeons who were using corn husks as bandages. Clara

paid for these supplies out of her own pocket, and also by gathering donations. In 1882, Clara

founded the American Red Cross after seeing the Red Cross operating in Switzerland. She

organized the American branch and served as the president until 1904. (History.com, 2019)

Mary Breckinridge was a pioneer in nurse midwifery and also in the development of

modern nursing in rural communities. She became a nurse after her first husband died of

appendicitis. Mary remarried and had two children, both of those children died. After this

tragedy, Mary left her husband to volunteer as a nurse for World War I. Mary served as a

public health nurse during the Influenza pandemic. She became qualified as a mid-wife and

organized the Committee for Mothers and Babies in Leslie County, which later became
