Corporate Social Responsibility
For the purpose of this paper, I will be discussing the code of ethics for the retail staple,
Walmart. In order to best analyze the argument its important to illustrate the main aspects of the
company. Walmart is a company based in Arkansas that is “engaged in the operation of retail, wholesale
and other units in formats around the world” The company operates 11,600 stores in over 28 countries,
and employ 2.2 million employees worldwide. In the year of 2020, amassed a whopping 524 billion
dollars. Walmart is not only one of the largest companies in the retail business sector, but as one of the
largest companies globally as well.
Because of this large position in global markets, Walmart has described their culture as one that
“drives their purpose of saving people money so they can live better” with the “foundation of culture is
commitment to operating with integrity” Walmart states their beliefs as follows:
1. Respect for the individual
a. This section discusses how to raise concern or report ethical violations. This includes
individual employee responsibility, disciplinary action for violation of ethical
standards, non-retaliation clauses, and standardized process for investigating reported
ethical violations discussed.
2. Service for their customers
a. This section discusses ethical standards regarding serving and supporting both their
consumer base as well as their surrounding communities. This would include alcohol
and drug free policies, discrimination and harassment policy, wage and hour
regulations and conflict of interest regulations.
, 3. Striving for excellence
a. This section discusses ethical standards regarding the goal of setting positive
examples of striving for excellence and innovation every day.
4. Act with integrity
a. This section discusses ethical standards regarding conducting themselves with
highest levels of integrity by being honest, fair and objective while operating in
compliance with all laws and our policies.
Walmart’s code of ethics adequately and thoroughly addresses and satisfies corporate social
responsibility. We define Corporate Social Responsibility as “self-regulating business model that helps a
company be socially accountable to itself, its stakeholders, and the public” (Fernando, 2020). Walmart
leverages their code of ethics to make sure that they as a company uphold themselves and their employees
to the highest ethical standards and furthermore satisfy the ethical needs of their employee base as well as
the communities that they operate within.
Legal Mandate Compliance
The ethical code of conduct created by Walmart possesses clear compliance to legal mandates. If
ethical concern were to arise at any level within the company the direction and guidelines in correcting
ethical issues are clear as defined within the code of conduct. They state that they expect all aspects of
their company to operate within and follow the law at all times, and in instances where the company is
asked to behave in a way that violates the laws in any way they are expected to report this to
management, human resources or Global Ethics. Employees are required to know and abide by these legal
mandates as they work for the company. As stated previously, we see policy regarding drug and alcohol
use, harassment, workplace violence, and discrimination. We also see non retaliation policies to protect
employees from identifying these violations of legal mandate compliance. These policies are clearly
defined for employees to follow to remain compliant with legal expectations and mandates.
