PRINCIPLES OF ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE
MANAGEMENT

WGU-C161

Performance outcomes are measures utilized by healthcare systems to attain

the high capabilities necessary to reduce errors, eliminate waste, and improve

clinical patient outcomes (Roussel, 2010). Leaders will be able to effectively

monitor progress, communicate and engage staff in improvement activities, and

generate a variety of nursing outcomes reports that can communicate progress to

key stakeholders (Roussel, 2010).

The Performance Data Scorecard

Dashboards are electronic tools that can provide real-time data or

retrospective data, known as a scorecard. Both data are useful in assessing quality

(Inamdar and Kaplan, 2002). Dashboards may report on hospital census or patient

satisfaction results. Also, dashboards are useful to guide staffing and can match

nurse staffing with quality outcomes (Singh and Sethi, 2017). As technology

advances, widespread use of dashboards to aggregate data and guide decision

making is to be expected. It is used to assist us in presenting data for multiple units

or systems to provide leaders with the ability to communicate large amounts of

information, track progress regarding results and program outcomes, and identify

needed improvements (Roussel, 2010).

,Population

Located in Port Jefferson, New York, on Long Island’s North Shore, John

T. Mather Memorial Hospital is a community teaching hospital, bariatric, and

stroke center of excellence with a certified operative capacity of 248 beds. It’ s

service area centers are in the Township of Brookhaven and encompasses a half a

million people in more than 45 distinct villages and towns. (Mather Hospital,

2019). The patient population admitted to our 3 East Telemetry Stroke Unit will

be used for this assessment.

Our 30-bed inpatient combined Telemetry and Stroke Unit located on 3 East

provides patient-centered care for the adult cardiac, neurologic, and medical-

surgical patients from diagnosis to those acutely ill or injured in varying stages of

recuperation from diagnostic and therapeutic interventions (Mather Hospital,

2019). For example, 42% of our patients are admitted to 3 East for non-intensive

telemetry monitoring due to life-threatening dysrhythmias and sudden death.

Diagnoses may include implantable cardioverter-defibrillator firing, type II and

complete atria-ventricular block, prolonged QT interval with ventricular

arrhythmia, decompensated heart failure, acute cerebrovascular event, acute

coronary syndrome, and massive blood transfusion. Monitoring is also beneficial

for selected patients with syncope, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, atrial

tachyarrhythmias, and uncorrected electrolyte abnormalities (Chen et al., 2007).

, Our patients are admitted from the Emergency Room, a floor care hospital

bed, the Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, a cardiovascular unit, or directly

from a physician’s office. However, they must be clinically stable and meet these

specific diagnosis criteria for admission that require continuous cardiac monitoring

with pulse oximetry capability interventions as standard practice (Mather Hospital,

2019). 3 East services approximately 960 individuals each year with an average

stay of 3 to five days before they are discharged home, to subacute rehab, or to the

next level of care at an affiliated hospital (Mather Hospital, 2019). To improve

benchmark performance measures, a balanced scorecard will be created to address

areas that would improve performance, quality, safety, and employee engagement.

One outcome measured related to the population identified for each of the

following indicators are as follows:

 Performance- Improve throughput time from the Emergency

department (E.D.) to the nursing unit.

 Quality- Improve IV ABX (Zosyn) documentation administration

times.

 Patient safety- Reduce patient falls.

 Employee engagement- Increase RN PCCN certification by 10%.
