NR-500-NP: Foundational Concepts and Advanced Practice Roles

APN Professional Development Plan

A Nurse Practitioner must always continue to advance their education but also must

remain within the scope of practice for the state in which they provide care. Nurse Practitioners

are leaders within their profession and have specific competencies that other nurses do not have.

These competnecies include practice injury, technology literacy, policy, health delivery, ethics,

leadership, and independent practice. This is the foundation of the Nurse Practitioner according

to the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF). (NONPF, 2011) This

paper will dive deeper into the competencies listed above and detail the scope of practice for the

Advanced Practice Nurse (APN).

APN Scope of Practice

Prior to practicing in the APN role in Georgia, the APN must have an active registered

nurse license in Georgia. The license must be unencumbered and the applicant must have passed

the required Board cetification and paid the required fees. The applicant must also submit an

official transcript that proves the applicant holds a master’s degree in nursing for the specialty

they wish to practice. They must also show evidence that the applicant has taken advanced

pharmacology, advanced physical assessment, and pathophysiology. (Georgia Secretary of State,

n.d.)

Georgia APN’s practice under restricted guidelines. They must practice under a written

nurse protocol that is signed by the APN, a licensed physician within the same type of specialty,

and a backup physician in any instance that the primary physician is not available. They can

order diagnostic testing, treatment plans, and ordering drugs. The Georgia APN does have

, prescriptive authority except for schedule I or II controlled substances, abortive medications, and

they cannot prescribe more than 12 months of a medication except for contraception, prenatal

vitamins, and hormonal therapy. These are limited to 24 months. (Georgia Secretary of State,

n.d.)

Nurse Practitioner Core Compentencies

Nurse practitioners must be well versed in specific competencies that were created by the

National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF). These competencies are

integrated into the curriculum and education of the masters-prepared nurse and the APN is

expected to demonstrate these 9 core competencies upon graduation. They include scientific

foundation, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, technology and information literacy, policy,

health delivery system, ethics, and independent practice. (NONPF, 2011)

Two competencies that I feel strongest in are the leadership and technology and

information literacy competencies. I feel that leadership is a strength because it is vital to

collaborate with other stakeholders to consistently make change and better the lives of our

patients. This change could be in policy, protocol, or communication of new practice trends.

Technology and information literacy is a strength because I feel that technology brings us

together as healthcare providers and offers a way for all of a patients caregivers to have the same

information to provide more positive outcomes. Techology also provides a more cost-effective

manner for the patient to be treated. (NONPF, 2011)

The two competencies that I feel I have the most opportunity to grow are policy and

independent practice. I want to know more about policy as it pertains to an APN. I am aware of

policy within my current scope but to develop more knowledge in the APN role and how that

directly affects my patients can assist me in making changes that influence the entire healthcare

system. Independent practice is another area for opportunity. In my current registered nurse role,

I do not have autonomy. I want to learn how to manage my patient’s treatment plans based on my
