Top Secret, Inc (TSI) has decided to implement a new operating system
(OS). After the upgrade issues arose with web server deadlocks. The OS does not
process properly the ordered acquisition of synchronization objects. The system that
reports the processes apart from the web server process are active and using the {ps-
ef} command. When rebooting this helps but soon as the webservers get
overwhelmed again the deadlock happens again.
A deadlock is a set of processes that is deadlocked if each process in the set
is waiting for an event that only another process in the set can cause. (Tanenbaum,
2015). There are four conditions for Resource deadlocks and all four must be present
for a resource deadlock. Deadlock modelling can help illustrate the processes and
predict deadlocks. Generally, there are 4 strategies to deal with deadlocks.
1. Ignore the issue (The Ostrich Algorithm)
2. Detection and recovery.
3. Dynamic avoidance by careful resource allocation.
4. Prevention by structurally negating one of the four conditions
(Tanenbaum, 2015).
TSI’s issue needs addressed so I would not recommend the Ostrich
Algorithm. I would recommend deadlock detection and recovery. The question
becomes is the system deadlocked and if so, which processes are involved. This can
