Unit 1 Task 2

In this booklet I will be discussing how and why two theories contribute to effective
communication and how. The two theories i will be talking about in my assignment
are Argyle’s stages of the communication cycle and Tuckman’s stages of group
interaction. These two theories can help with effective communication because if
each theory is followed well there will be effective communication as people will
listen to each other and they will think before they speak.

Theory 1:Argyle’s stages of the communication cycle
The Argyle’s theory is about how Argyle argued that driving is like communication.
Argyle’s theory is argued that he had to explain that interpersonal interaction that
involves a cycle where people must translate and decode what other people are
communicating and to adapt own behaviour to communicate effectively (Health and
Social Care, 2017). It is like driving because it involves the understanding of
listening, observing and reflecting on how another person needs to communicate. It
is aimed for one to one communication (Prezi, 2016).

For this theory, Argyle says that there are six stages, which are:
Ideas occur:
In this stage, when an idea occurs it means that the person is thinking of something
that the person would like to have a conversation about.
Message coded:
In this stage, the person will think about what to say and in what form of
communication it should be on. For example, gestures, sign language, spoken
words etc.
Message sent:
This means that the person decides to send a message in a way that the person
feels comfortable to say it either through speech or writing.

Message received:
This stage is when the message was already sent, and the other person will notice
that a message was sent while hearing it or seeing it.
Message decoded:
This means that the person will try to understand the message the other person has
sent while using own knowledge of communication skills.
Message understood:
At this stage, the person understood the message that has been sent by the other
person clearly and now he/she can give feedback, which will repeat the process of
communication cycle.
