Samenvatting water challenges of megacities
The book:
Mapping is an important activity in delta urbanism. It is a means to generate knowledge for
planning and design in urbanized deltas.
Alexander von Humboldt and Carl Ritter recognized the landscape as a complex system of
systems. In their opinion, the earth was an inseparable organic whole, all parts of which were
mutually interdependent, including man. In order to get a grip on the great complexity of the
landscape, they used graphic techniques to catalogue, define, compare and reason through
the collected scientific data. Their published work is full of illustrations, maps and charts,
many of which were very influential.
Mapping urbanized deltas helps to understand mutual relations among the different
components within and between different deltas, providing new perspectives on how to
enhance their adaptability and sustainable urban development.
City blueprint approach
The City Blueprint Approach is a diagnosis tool and consist of three complementary frameworks. Het
maakt de governance gap meetbaar.
3 vormen:
1. TPF Trends Pressures Framework cities main challenges
2. CBF CityBlueprint performance Framework how adequate is the water management of
the city
3. GCF Governance Capacity Framework where can the cities governance be improved
The City Blueprint Approach is a method to assess the sustainability of Integrated Water Resources
Management (IWRM) in municipalities and regions.
City challenges
Today, 3.5 billion people - half of humanity – live in cities
In 2030, 60% of the global population will live in cities
In 2015, 80% of the megacities is located in river deltas
Water challenges
90 % of disasters are water-related
Different threats
Flooding from rivers and sea
Disruptions from precipitation
Groundwater and subsidence
Heat
Asian water development
National water security
Household providing sanitation and safe water
Economic industry, energy, agriculture
o Water grows our food, powers our industry and cools energy
generating

Environmental health of rivers (pollution) and ecosystems
, Resilience to water-related disasters adapt
Increased pressure
Sea level rise
Change precipitation patterns
Longer periods of heat and drought
Increased vulnerability
Urbanization
Sacrificing forest and natural land
- Pressure on water resources
Water brings life and energy
Also poses the biggest threat to society
- Key challenges to urban liveability
Water extremes and vulnerabilities
Population growth and urban densities
Degrading environments
Urban heat
- Flooding
Climate threat
Sea
River
Regional water system
Exposure and sensitivity
30 % residential areas exposed by low elevation
Last 30 – 50 years more built in risk areas
Cultural heritage hardly threatened
Vulnerability
Exposure and sensibility to damage does increase, not the probability
- Water in the streets
Climate threat
Increased precipitation intensity
Exposure and sensitivity
Flash floods
Limited inundation depths
Vulnerability
Depends on storage and discharge capacity
More storage in streets; in particular for lower elevation areas.
- Water shortage and droughts
Climate threat
