shockingly high. Heart disease, cancer, diabetes, are the top three leading diseases that causes
the highest disability and/ or death rate, (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021) and
are the health problems that cost the most as well. In 2020, the cost for treatment associated with
cancer was $174 billion per year, heart disease at $214 billion (with a $138 billion in lost), while
diabetes was sitting at $327 billion back in 2017. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
2021)
Healthcare cost has left a hefty burden on our society and the pockets of patients and
their families. It has been estimated, that out of the $174 billion for the treatment of cancer, only
50% of that cost was the cost of office visits and outpatient, 35% was for hospital inpatient stays
and
11% was for the cost of medications. (The American Cancer Society medical and editorial
content team, 2018) Health insurance is the key to receiving the best health care. Those without
insurance, aren’t being diagnosed in the early stages and are stuck waiting until the symptoms
became sever before being able to be treated. In return, means the treatment is more expensive
and timelier. “Uninsured patients and those from ethnic minorities are substantially more likely
to be diagnosed with cancer at a later stage, when treatment can be more extensive, more
costly, and less successful.” (The American Cancer Society medical and editorial content team,
2018)
