Ethical Dilemmas
Ethics is the philosophical discipline and moral principles on which we base our
behavior, actions, and decision-making (Fieser, n.d.). It is essentially a personalized scale of right
and wrong. However, personal and professional ethics are two different things. Personal ethics
come from family and social norms, whereas professional ethics are rules and regulations
commonly agreed upon by a board or committee (Miller & Lovler, 2018). These rules and
regulations provide guidelines and protection to the workers as well as to the client or patient.
Unfortunately, there are situations where it is difficult to know the right choice or decision; this is
an ethical dilemma. Ethical dilemmas may give us pause on how to act because it is uncertain
which is the best course of action. When this happens in a professional setting, the organization's
ethical guidelines help find clarity for those uncertain situations and help navigate ethical issues
and dilemmas.
The American Psychological Association
In 1953, The American Psychological Association, APA, established specific
standards and ethical practices for all who work and practice within the psychological field.
The "Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct" assist in ethical decision-
making. Also, it provides rules on ethical ways to gather information, keep records, treat
clients, perform assessments and research, educate, and keep the patient/client safe from harm
and their information private (2017). The most current version of the APA "Ethical Principles
of Psychologists and Code of Conduct" was updated in 2010 (Miller & Lovler, 2018).
, There are three parts to the APA "Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of
Conduct," general principles, ethical standards, and the 2010 amendments (Miller & Loveler,
2018). When it comes to ethical dilemmas, the ethical standards portion is the most useful. It lists
the enforceable rules to which those who work in the psychology field must adhere. There are ten
ethical standards to follow. They are resolving ethical issues, competence, human relations,
privacy and confidentiality, advertising and other public statements, record keeping and training,
research and publications, assessment, and therapy (Miller & Lovler, 2018).
Scenario Discussion
The APA guidelines can assist with ethical dilemmas in the field of psychology. The
following scenario presents a psychological, ethical dilemma to discuss. The example states, "A
clinician often tests in unsuitable conditions by having clients that are not comfortable with
technology or computer assessments. The examiner often conducts testing without breaks or
reading the instructions. He/she allows untrained staff to administer tests, and testing rooms are
unacceptable, i.e., hot/cold/rooms or construction noise outside the building."
The APA "Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct" is concerned with
avoiding harming the patient or client (2002). Additionally, section nine discusses how to
administer tests and assessments to the patient or client ethically. (APA, 2017). This section
breaks the importance of how to construct tests for clients, what type of language to use in the
test, how the data from the test is released, maintaining test security, and scoring and interpreting
test results.
If a violation occurs in one, or any, of the APA codes or standard, it should be reported.
It is the practitioner's job or anyone who works in the psychological field to understand these
rules for the patient's safety and the validity of the test or assessment, according to the "Ethical
Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct" ( 2002). Suppose the practitioner engages in
the unethical testing of a patient or client, as seen in the scenario; the conflict resolution must be
