Communication is such a fascinating topic. It’s what differentiates us from other

people and makes us truly unique. Not one culture is like another, and this can be easily

identified when the concept of body language, physical space, verbal and nonverbal attributes,

eye-contact, and attending skills are carefully examined and compared/contrasted. Across

cultures, everyone has a different social and cultural background where one was taught how to

communicate to one another. Not one method is considered to be “right or wrong”. When we

examine different cultural and ethnic groups, it is determined that we all communicate

uniquely, and equally as effective as each other, no matter our background.

Individuals in high-context cultures (nonverbal communication styles as the primary),

such as South Americans, Africans, Southern Europeans, Arabs, and Asians, have different

communication styles than those of low-context cultures (dependent on verbal

communication) such as those who are Swiss, German, Scandinavian, American, and

Australian. Those living in high-context cultures value physical space to be ‘communal’, and

to stand close to one another is a very popular practice (PointPark.edu, 2020). This contrasts

with low-context cultures because the luxury of privacy is highly valued in these types of

cultures.

In terms of conflict-resolution communication styles between high-context cultures vs.

low-context cultures, those who identify as someone who was immersed in high-context

cultures view disagreements and conflicts as threatening and deeply personal. It is best for

these types of issues to be resolved immediately or completely avoid it. This contrasts with
