IT222 Introduction to Cloud Computing

SLA Monitoring

A Cloud SLA ensure that cloud providers meet certain enterprise-level requirements and provide

their customers with a clearly defined set of deliverables. It provides financial penalties like

credits for service time, if the providers fail to meet the guaranteed terms. An SLA Monitoring

took place after the contractual agreement to meet the client expectations. The SLA Monitoring

process is done by using several statistics like a systematic process of collecting the data,

analyzing the data, monitoring the data and other factors that derive the higher value to the

business. “The standard SLA for virtual servers in DTGOV’s leasing agreements defines a

minimum IT resource availability of 99.95%, which is tracked using two SLA monitors: one

based on a polling agent and the other based on a regular monitoring agent implementation. SLA

Monitor Polling Agent: DTOV’s polling SLA monitor runs in the external perimeter network to

detect physical server timeouts. It is able to identify data center network, hardware, and software

failures (with minute-granularity) that result in physical server non-responsiveness. Three

consecutive timeouts of 20-second poling periods are required to declare IT resource

unavailability. Three types of events are generated: PS_Timeout – the physical server polling has

timed out, PS_Unreachable – the physical server polling has consecutively times out three times,

PS_Reachable – the previously unavailable physical server becomes responsive to polling again.

SLA Monitoring Agent: The VIM’s event -driven API implements the SLA monitor as a

monitoring agent to generate the following three events: VM_Unreachable – the VIM cannot

reach the VM, VM_Failure – the VM has failed and is unavailable, and VM_Reachable – the

, VM is reachable. The events generated by the polling agent have timestamps that are logged into

an SLA event log database and used by the SLA management system to calculate IT resource

availability. Complex rules are used to correlate events from different polling SLA monitors and

the affected virtual server, and to discard any false positives for periods of unavailability. The

SLA management system uses the information stored in the log database to calculate the period

of unavailability as t4-t3, which affected all of the virtual servers in the data center.” (Erl,

Mahmood, & Puttini, 2018)

Load Balancer

Load balancing in cloud computing is the process in which workloads and computing resources

are distributed across more than on server. The workload is divided among two or more servers,

network interfaces, hard drives and other computing resources which will result in better usage

and system response time. High traffic websites require highly efficient load balancing for a

smooth operation of their business. Load balancing helps in maintaining system firmness,

performance and protection against system failures. (Jhaveri, n.d.) “A common approach to

horizontal scaling a workload across two or more IT resources to increase performance and

capacity beyond what a single IT resources can provide. The load balancer mechanism is a

runtime agent with logic fundamentally based on this premise. Beyond simple division of labor

algorithms, load balancers can preform a range of specialized runtime workload distribution

functions that include: Asymmetric Distribution – larger workloads are issued to IT resources

with higher processing compacities, Workload Prioritization – workloads are scheduled, queued,

discarded, and distributed workloads according to their priority levels, Content-Aware

Distribution – requests are distributed to different IT resources as dictated by the request content.

A load balancer is programmed or configured with a set of performance and QoS rules and

parameters with the general objectives of optimizing IT resource usage, avoiding overloads, and

maximizing throughput. The load balancer mechanism can exist as a: multi-layer network

switch, dedicated hardware appliance, dedicated software-based system (common in server
