PS-124 Intro to Psychology

Harry Harlow conducted an experiment on baby rhesus monkeys. The laboratory experiment has

two different artificial mothers. One artificial mother was made of wire and provided sustenance,

the other artificial mother was made of a soft towel and provided no sustenance. He observed

that the monkey would go to “wire mother” for food but would spend much of its time with the

“cloth mother. " When the monkeys were placed in an unfamiliar environment alone, the monkey

did not respond well, it yelled, screamed, and clutched itself for security. Harlow placed the

“wire mother” into the same environment with the monkey, it showed no improvement but when

he placed the “cloth mother” into the environment with the monkey, it ran to the “cloth mother”

clutching it, instantaneously calming (Harlow, H., Dodsworth, R., Harlow, M. 1965). The

monkeys consider the “cloth mother” to be the most like a mother. There were some monkeys

taken away from the birth mother and placed in isolation between 3 and 12 months. The

monkeys were kept in isolation the least amount of time had the ability to coexist with other

monkeys once placed back into a social environment (Harlow, H., Dodsworth, R., Harlow, M.

1965). It was the monkeys who were kept in isolation for extensive amounts of time and having

never formed any kind of attachment that were permanently damaged. They did not have the

ability to socialize with the other monkeys when placed back with the others. They would harm

themselves and try to self-soothe by rocking, one monkey even died of starvation. It was

Harlow's goal to test the attachment theory and my question would have been, was it sustenance

or love that would sustain the monkeys and help them to develop in a healthy way. Harlow

concluded that early in life, the monkeys with maternal deprivation are socially and emotionally
