There are many factors that form the competitive environment and macro environment of
organizations. Every organization operates in a macro environment with laws and regulations,
economy, demographics, technology, and social values being the five components that comprise
it (Bateman et al., 2019). The competitive environment components consist of rivals, new
competitors, customers, suppliers, and substitute products and services in the immediate
surrounding environment (Bateman et al., 2019). I work for a company called Davita and they
provide patients with end-stage renal disease life-saving treatments 2-4 times a week. These
patients come to an outpatient clinic to have toxins or waste products and excess fluids filtered
out of their blood and these treatments last multiple hours.
Davita is one of the leading dialysis providers in the U.S. and its administrative services
cover about 2,755 outpatient centers and 206,900 patients across the country, according to
Hoovers Profile (2020). Laws and regulations are factors of a macro environment that affects
Davita. The most prominent law is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of
1996 or HIPAA. This federal law protects how Protected Health Information (PHI) is created,
reviewed, used, and maintained and was put in place because of the increasing use of technology
replacing the paper process. Another macro environmental factor is technology. Technology
impacts this company because it uses Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and these programs are
always changing and trying to improve. The next factor is social values. Davita has a set of core
values that provides employees with a set of guidelines to help fulfill the companies' mission.
