increasing. For extra proof, because I’m only 19 years old and I don’t pay rent, I asked my
dad “Did you happen to notice an increase in rent over the past couple of years?”. My dad
responded with saying “yes”. The number one cause of homelessness is the
lack of affordable housing (N. A., 2020). In recent years, homelessness in New York City has
reached the highest level since the great depression of the 1930s. In November
2020, there were 57,016 homeless people, including 18,368 homeless children, sleeping each
night in the municipal shelter system (N. A., 2020). Benefits of the mayor of New York should
pay for more apartment buildings to be built. It would help give shelter to the people who can’t
afford to pay rent due to New York increasing it and because New York City has the highest
number of homeless people of any metropolitan area in the US.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been harder on everyone to continue on with their
lives. Jobs have been closing. Some people even stopped working in order to protect their
health. I know because I watched a family member do it. Recently, the number of homeless
people has worsened, it’s just over 2% rising over the last year (Adamczyk,2020). Things are so
bad in New York City that even the head of the
national homeless coalition said “there’s never been anything like this.”. In July, some
