Samenvatting NL / Boek IsabelleIn het plaatsje Auvergne (Frankrijk) is op een dag de filmster Isabelle
Amable verdwenen. Na enige tijd geeft de politie het op, Isabelle blijft
onvindbaar. Een dorpsonderwijzer (die ook verliefd is op Isabelle) geeft
niet op en blijft doorzoeken.
Ondertussen zit Isabelle opgesloten in de kelder van Jeanne Bitor, een
oerlelijke, jaloerse vrouw. Isabelle wordt gedwongen om model te staan
voor Jeanne’s schilderijen. Ze wilt Isabelle uithongeren en schilderen tot
de dood en verder. Na enige tijd beginnen Isabelle en Jeanne een band
te krijgen. Maar als Jeanne erachter komt dat Isabelle tegen haar heeft
gelogen wilt ze zo snel mogelijk haar werk afmaken.
De volgende morgen heeft Isabelle zichzelf opgehangen, tenminste dat
speelt ze. In de tussentijd begint Bernard vermoedens te krijgen dat er
iets mis is met Jeanne en besluit om een kijkje te nemen in haar
huis. Daar vind hij Isabelle en red haar leven nog net op tijd. Hij heeft
eindelijk de vrouw van zijn dromen gevonden maar als hij merkt dat
Isabelle alleen nog maar aan Jeanne denkt merkt hij dat ze helemaal
niet zo perfect is. Jeanne verdwijnt voor goed en Bernard doet er alles
aan om haar te vinden. Zijn liefde voor Isabelle is omgezet naar zijn
liefde voor Jeanne.
